Concord Rolls Up High Finishes at Dr. Jack Toms Invite

LYNCHBURG, W.Va. – The Concord University men's track & field team sported 15 top-20 finishes at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Invite Friday and Saturday at the University of Lynchburg.

Distance events were at the forefront of the action as five Mountain Lions finished in the top 20 of the 3,000-steeplechase.

Junior Braden Ward was the top finisher for CU as he crossed in fifth with a time of 9:41.05. Sophomore Reese Hickey was two spots back as he recorded a time of 9:50.82. Junior AJ Skeens occupied the final top 10 spot as he ran 9:53.78. Junior Andrew Tickle clocked 9:54.14 to finish 11th.

Freshman Johnny Walkup came through in 10:25.36 for 16th while junior Wes Holcomb rounded out the Concord field in the steeplechase by running 11:03.96 in 21st.

Ward was sixth in the 5,000-meter run Friday night as he stopped the timer at 15:04.78. Hickey placed ninth in 15:12.39, a career-best time. Sophomore Brandon Canaday finished 15th as he clocked 15:36.60.

Also on Friday night, Walkup finished ninth in the 10,000-meter run with a showing of 32:42.86.

Sophomore Tobi Adebulu was ninth in the high jump, clearing 1.70 meters. He also finished 19th in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 20.30 seconds. Adebulu added a 21st-place showing in the long jump at 5.42 meters.

The duo of sophomores Daminn Cunningham and Dallas Ford were in the top 10 of the triple jump. Cunningham marked 13.32 meters, good enough for sixth. Ford soared to a mark of 12.97 meters to finish eighth.

Freshman Myles Gurnee ran 57.58 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles to place 11th.

Junior Shawn Bennett led the throwing events for CU. He was 17th in the hammer throw in a personal-record distance of 36.27 meters. He was also 20th in the shot put with a second career-best throw of 11.90 meters. Sophomore Marquise Walker tossed 23.55 meters in the hammer to place 22nd.

Senior Martin Medrano was 19th in the javelin with a mark of 26.21 meters.

The Mountain Lions will be at the Golden Eagle Invite hosted by the University of Charleston Friday, April 3.
