Concord Travels to 49er Classic

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's and women's track & field teams travel to the Charlotte 49er Classic as the meet starts Thursday with the decathlon and heptathlon and continues with running and field events Friday and Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT
Concord opened up the outdoor season with the Mikey Cox Distance Classic at Callaghan Stadium last Saturday. The men's team posted 10 individual event wins. Sophomore Reese Hickey broke the outdoor school record in the outdoor mile as he clocked 4:19.46. Junior Bramley Childress won the 10,000-meter run with a personal-record showing of 33:22.43. Junior Shawn Bennett collected three wins in the throwing events: hammer throw (35.01 meters), discus (32.93 meters) and shot put (11.58 meters). Sophomore Daminn Cunningham cleared 1.97 meters in the high jump for his victory.

The CU women did one better by collecting 11 event wins. Junior Sara Turner was responsible for two wins as she clocked 431:15.81 in the 10,000-meters and ran 6:23.84 in the mile. Freshman Violet Wall claimed a win in the 3,000-meter run (10:51.56). Junior Charlotte McGinnis came through in 21:18.21 in the win the 5,000-meter run. Freshman Chloe Cox won the discus (30.33 meters) and hammer (30.51 meters). Sophomore Cierra Parker went over 1.70 meters in the high jump to win while sophomore Cassidy Hammonds marked 5.68 meters in the long jump for her victory.

49er CLASSIC ENTRIES
Hammonds gets the action started for the Mountain Lions on Thursday as she will compete in her first heptathlon of the outdoor season. She is the defending Mountain East Conference Champion in the event. Four Concord female athletes will be on the starting line for the 800-meter run. Freshman Avery Lilly, McGinnis, Wall and freshman Larissa Wickline compete in the half-mile. Four more will start the 5,000-meters in sophomore Larah Blevins, junior Piper Doughton junior Abbey Londeree and Turner. Parker returns to the same venue at Charlotte that set the school record in the high jump (1.71 meters) last year. Cox will look to build off her performance from last week as she is entered in the discus along with junior Meagan Poticher.

The competition begins Thursday for the CU men as well as sophomore Tobi Adebulu does the first half of the decathlon. In the 400-meter dash will be freshman William Jackson and sophomore Aaron Miller. Moving up in distance, Childress is entered in the 5,000-meters along with junior Andrew Tickle and freshman Johnny Walkup. The 10,000-meters features sophomore Brandon Canaday, Hickey and junior Braden Ward. Sophomore Dallas Ford makes his outdoor season debut in the triple jump. Ford finished up the indoor season by breaking the school record event (14.05 meters) and was All-MEC Honorable Mention.
