SLING THE ROCK
In Concord's 41-31 win over Frostburg State, graduate quarterback
Devin Kargman threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns—his second straight game going over 300 yards. The Camden, New Jersey native moved up to 18
th in Division II in passing yards (1,350) with the Frostburg State performance. Kargman also had his best game completing the ball, coming through with a career-best 21 completions while completing 70 percent of his throws (21-for-30). Kargman's 11 touchdowns in 2026 are second in the MEC. And over the last three games, Kargman has thrown nine touchdowns to just one interception. The last time a CU quarterback only had one interception in a three-game stretch was in 2022 when Jack Mangel started the year with seven touchdowns and a single pick.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Sophomore wide receivers
Dom Collins and
Ethan Jackson combined to catch all four touchdowns from Kargman against Frostburg State. Collins hauled in a career-best nine receptions for a season-high 152 yards. With the performance, Collins is tied for fifth in Division II in both yards (618) and touchdowns (seven) this season, and he heads into Saturday's game having recorded back-to-back 150-yard games for the second time in his career. Meanwhile, Jackson started his first career game versus Frostburg State as he came down with four catches for 51 yards and the pair of scores. Prior to Saturday, Jackson had only caught one ball for seven yards—against Charleston—for the season. Collins and Jackson became the first CU teammates with two receiving touchdowns in the same game since October 29, 2022 against Wheeling when Jarod Bowie and Kris Copeland each had three touchdowns.
TAKE IT AWAY
A big reason for the Mountain Lions holding off Frostburg State in the second half was the CU defense coming up with four takeaways against the Bobcats, three came in the second half. Junior linebacker
Jonathan Williams notched his first career interception in the first half while junior defensive back
Bradly Harris and redshirt freshman defensive back
Elijah Owens did the same in the second half. And the final turnover came from special teams ace sophomore defensive back
Marley Ashley who jumped on a fumble after a strip sack from redshirt freshman defensive end
Quay McCauley. The four takeaways by the Mountain Lions were the most since registering four takeaways against Glenville State in mid-October of the 2024 campaign. With the four forced turnovers, CU's turnover margin for the season rose to +3 which ranks in a tie for first in the MEC with West Virginia Wesleyan and West Liberty, and is tied for 37
th in Division II.Â
MAKE AN IMPACT
Not only did Owens come away with his first career interception in Saturday's game, the Greensboro, North Carolina native recorded two sacks, from his cornerback spot, and forced a fumble on the second-half sack. Owens joins graduate defensive end
Shambre Jackson as Mountain Lions with two-sack games this season—Jackson's two-sack game was against Bluefield State. Owens is the only defensive back in the MEC with two or more sacks this season as he has collected 2.5 sacks. Additionally, he is tied for first in the conference in fumble recoveries (two), coming in consecutive weeks against Davidson and Bluefield State. Entering Saturday at West Virginia State, Owens is seventh on the team in tackles (15) while adding 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.
SO, SO CLOSE
Concord has lost nine straight games to West Virginia State—tied for the longest active streak against an annual MEC opponent. However, those losses have been some near misses by the Mountain Lions. Last season at Callaghan Stadium, CU outgained West Virginia State, 456-401, and was 21-17 at halftime before being shutout in the second half in a 28-21 defeat. In 2023, the Mountain Lions held a 13-3 advantage after one quarter, but watched WVSU score 37 combined points in the middle quarters of a 47-27 loss. And in 2021, Concord was unable to convert a two-point conversion with less than 30 seconds left in a 34-32 defeat. The closest call for the Mountain Lions at WVSU came in 2022 when CU was up 28-9 halfway through the second quarter before being outscored 47-10 over the final 38 minutes of the game.
PUT ON A SHOW
The Mountain Lions and Yellow Jackets racked up the yardage in different ways last season in Athens. Former standout quarterback
Tyler Mizzell threw for 326 yards last season versus West Virginia State. WVSU ran for 241 yards at Concord in 2025. Junior tight end
Headley Isnadin caught his only career touchdown versus West Virginia State last fall. Saturday's game could be a mirror image of last year's game as Concord leads the MEC in total offense (439.4) while West Virginia State is second with 425.4 yards per game. WVSU is the only team in the MEC rushing for more than 200 yards per game (213.8) as the Yellow Jackets rank 28
th in Division II. Concord's passing offense at 271.8 yards per game is first in the MEC and 22
nd in the country.
MOVE THE STICKS
Because of the high-octane offenses, Concord and West Virginia State are two of the best at getting first downs in the MEC. WVSU ranks second with 21.8 first downs per game while the Mountain Lions are just behind at 21.6 first downs per contest, third in the conference. CU is first in the MEC and top 50 in Division II at converting third downs, 43.8 percent. West Virginia State does its work on first and second downs as the Yellow Jackets have converted an MEC-low 20 third downs this year and ranks seventh in third-down percent, 30.8. Over the last two games, the Mountain Lions have gained 55 first downs, the most in a two-game stretch since racking up 58 first downs against Charleston and West Virginia State in 2022.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
3- Freshman kicker
Christian Torres is just one of three kickers in Division II to have attempted at least six field goals this season without a miss. Torres is 7-for-7 after going 2-of-2 against Frostburg State.
15.6 – Kargman is averaging 15.6 yards per completion this year.
95- Concord had its longest play from scrimmage in program history last season versus WVSU with a 95-yard pass play.
SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS
West Virginia State has played three quarterbacks this season, Joe Dailey, Kaleb Jackson and Bryan Johnson. Last season, Jackson threw for nearly 2,300 yards and 17 touchdowns. After seeing limited snaps in the first three games of this season, Jackson has thrown for 485 yards and five touchdowns against Fairmont State and West Liberty. Devin Cox spearheads the run game with 329 yards and four touchdowns. Justin Pessoa has rolled up 308 yards rushing. Malik Baker and Amare Ary and West Liberty transfer Osama Hurst have all caught three touchdowns. Baker has a team-best 372 receiving yards. WVSU's defense only has three takeaways this year. Keyshon Washington leads the unit with 35 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss.
