Concord Rolls Up 73 Points in Convincing Win at West Virginia State, 73-49

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University football team piled up 73 points as it rolled to a 73-49 win at West Virginia State Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game played at Dickerson Stadium.

The 73 points are the fourth most in an MEC game while topping the 70-point mark represents the third time in program history with 70 or more points in a game—the 2010 team scored 72 versus Southern Virginia and the 1924 Mountain Lions posted 107 points versus Charleston.
Concord (4-2, 2-2 MEC) scored on its first four possessions, including a one-play drive and a two-play drive to start the game. Sophomore running back Curtis Clark ran the opening kickoff down to the  WVSU four-yard line for junior running back Greg Burrell to score on the next play—it was also the start of a big day for Clark.

After West Virginia State (1-5, 0-4 MEC) scored on its opening drive, graduate quarterback Devin Kargman found junior wide receiver Cordale Russell in stride for a 73-yard score.
With the teams matching scores, the Mountain Lions separated themselves right before halftime.

Freshman kicker Christian Torres booted through a 50-yard field goal with 1:03 left in the second quarter. Then, the CU defense backed it up with a stop, and forced WVSU to punt with 36 seconds remaining. On the first play from scrimmage on the ensuing Concord possession, Kargman hit sophomore wide receiver Dom Collins who broke free and raced 70 yards for a score to give CU a 38-28 edge.

The onslaught continued out of halftime as the Concord defense joined the scoring. Sophomore defensive back Berlin Campfort intercepted a pass on the first play of the third quarter and ran 25 yards for a touchdown.

Another quick Yellow Jackets' possession turned into another quick score for the Mountain Lions. On the third play from scrimmage, Kargman connected with Clark for a 39-yard touchdown to expand the lead to 52-28.

Russell and Clark accounted for the next two touchdowns as Russell hauled in a 62-yard score from Kargman while Clark got loose on a 75-yard rushing touchdown with 16 seconds left in the third quarter.

Russell capped his hat trick of touchdowns with a 71-yard score midway through the fourth.

Russell became the sixth wide receiver to top 200 yards in program history as he finished the day with 217 yards on four receptions to go with his three touchdowns. Collins brought in six catches for 123 yards and a pair of scores.

At the front of the aerial display was Kargman who needed just 16 completions (16-for-20) to throw for 401 yards and six touchdowns.

Clark became CU's first 100-yard rusher of the year as he ran for 119 yards on 10 carries. He added a catch for 39 yards and a score, and racked up 106 yards in the return game.

Concord gained 627 yards of offense in the contest and averaged 11.2 yards per play.

Campfort had a busy day on defense as he finished with a team-high nine tackles to go 1.5 tackles for loss and his first career interception. Sophomore defensive back Christian Henderson threw in seven tackles.

The Mountain Lions welcome Glenville State for a Homecoming Saturday matchup at Callaghan Stadium October 17. Kickoff is at 2:00 p.m.
