Concord Competes at MEC Championships Starting Sunday

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's and women's track & field teams compete at the Mountain East Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Frostburg State in Frostburg, Maryland Sunday through Tuesday.

MEC CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRIES
Among the top entries for the Mountain Lion women is senior Emily Wallace in the 5,000-meter run as she enters with the second-fastest time in the conference this season (18:03.71). Wallace ran 4:47.03 in the 1,500-meter run this spring which was fifth in the conference. Sophomore Madison Cornett and freshman Katy Walkup will double up in the 5,000-meters and 10,000-meter run. Cornett is the fifth seed (40:29) while Walkup is seventh (42:11). Freshman Talayna Holmes' 200-meter dash time of 25.80 seconds is ranked seventh in the MEC while her 100-meter dash seed of 12.37 seconds is eighth. Senior Jerell Strachan clocked 58.89 seconds to earn the fourth seed in the event. The top field event entries for the Mountain Lions are freshman Lilly Jackson (28.85 meters) and junior Alaina Mills (26.83 meters) in the javelin, ranking eighth and tenth, respectively.

Graduate student Issac Prather has the top entry in the MEC in the 1,500-meters (3:49.13), 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:47.98) and the 5,000-meters (13:57.87). Additionally, Prather is ranked fourth in Division II in the steeplechase and 12th in the 5,000-meters. Three different Mountain Lions are in the top eight in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as sophomore Logan Zuchelli (fourth) and Hatcher (eighth) join Prather. Zuchelli (fourth/31:08), junior Preston Prather (fifth/31:30) and graduate student Samuel Haynes (sixth/31:44) are ranked in the scoring zone of the 10,000-meters. Graduate student Gerard Hearst has the third-fastest 100-meter time in the conference, 10.59 seconds. Senior Robbie Cochran clocked 56.11 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles two weeks ago to rank fifth in the MEC.

MEC CHAMPIONSHIP CONCORD NOTES
Sophomore Erin O'Sullivan was the runner-up in the steeplechase last season at the MEC Championships. This spring, she enters with the fifth-best time in the conference (12:33.59). Wallace placed third in the 1,500-meters at the MEC Championships in 2022 while graduate student Hannah Altizer was third in 2021. The duo along with senior Gretchen Mills are scheduled to compete in the 1,500-meters at the meet. A. Mills scored points in the javelin for CU last year at the MEC Championships with an eighth-place showing.

The reigning MEC Athlete of the Year for the indoor and outdoor seasons is I. Prather as he swept the steeplechase, 5,000-meters and 10,000-meters last spring. Concord's 4x400-meter relay were the runners-up last year. This year's squad of sophomore Ethan Board, Cochran, sophomore Ian Gardner and senior Alex Watty have run 3:28.11, fifth in the conference. Gardner was the runner-up in the open 400-meter dash in 2022. Gardner has a seed of seventh this year (49.47 seconds) while sophomore Prince Bhebhe is 15th (54.43 seconds). Watty earned a podium finish in the 800-meters last season by finishing third. Watty is seventh this season while Board is ninth and sophomore Zach Wilson is 15th. Drennen just missed the podium in the 1,500-meters last season by placing fourth. He will be in the 1,500-meters and 5,000-meters this weekend.
