ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's track & field team had a myriad of high-quality performances at the Liberty Open Friday.
The distance events were a major highlight of the meet.
In the 5,000-meter run, three Mountain Lions were in the top 15. Junior
Braden Ward led the way with a third-place showing in a time of 15:13.29. Sophomore
Brandon Canaday followed in sixth as he crossed the line in a career-best time of 15:25.33. And freshman
Johnny Walkup ran 16:08.36, good enough for 12
th.
Ward backed up his 5,000-meters with a personal-record time of 8:34.03 in the 3,000-meter run. He finished eighth in the event, and in the process bumped up to fifth in the Mountain East Conference. Fellow junior
Andrew Tickle stopped the timer at 9:07.57 which was 13
th in the field. Walkup ran 9:15.61 for 19
th.
Redshirt freshman
Dom Collins rolled to a time of 6.81 seconds in the finals of 60-meter dash as he finished in the runner-up spot. Collins' time is second fastest in the MEC this season.
Sophomore
Daminn Cunningham was a top-10 finisher in the high jump as he cleared 1.80 meters for ninth. Also in the field events, junior
Shawn Bennett tossed 10.52 meters in the shot put, placing 16
th.
Sophomore
Reese Hickey was one of four Mountain Lions with a career-best time in the mile run. Hickey came through in 4:24.07, junior
Bramley Childress crossed the tape in 4:25.33, Canaday checked in at 4:31.71 and freshman
Zach Neal ran 5:09.83.
Freshman
William Jackson rounded out the top performances with a season-best time of 51.22 seconds in the 400-meter dash which puts him in the top 10 of the MEC.
CU is right back to competition January 30-31 at Roanoke College's Bast-Cregger Invite.
