LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Concord University men's track & field team was strong at the Dr. Jack Toms Invite at Lynchburg College Friday and Saturday.
The Mountain Lions tallied a win in the 4x400-meter relay as the quartet freshmen
Ethan Board and
Ian Gardner, junior
Alex Watty and fifth-year senior
Marcus Wilson came from behind to win the event in a season-best time of 3:25.12.
Four different Concord athletes were in the top 10 of the 5,000-meter run. Senior
Cedric Drennen finished third in a showing of 14:58.40. Junior
Nate Leichner clocked 15:28.71 to finish fifth while sophomore
Preston Prather was one second behind to finish sixth. Fifth-year senior
Samuel Haynes came through in 15:37.38 to place eighth.
Gardner had a stellar showing in the 100-meter dash as he stopped the timer at 11.64 seconds to place 13
th.
In the throwing events, fifth-year senior
JT Turner was 14
th in the shot put (12.09 meters). Meanwhile, fifth-year senior
Dwain Porterfield marked 36.56 meters in the javelin to finish 18
th.
Earlier in the meet, Board clocked 2:00.03 in the 800-meter run to finish 12
th while fifth-year senior
Raheem Williams came through in 2:03.98 to place 19
th.
Other top finishers for Concord included Watty (21
st / 53.27 seconds) in the 400-meter dash, Wilson (16
th / 59.96 seconds) and freshman
Jonny Sweeney (25
th / 1:06.37) in the 400-meter hurdles and Sweeney (25
th / 20.17 seconds) in the 110-meter high hurdles.
On Friday night at Raleigh Relays, senior
Issac Prather ran 29:36.50 in the 10,000-meter run as he only missed the school record by two seconds. Freshman
Logan Zuchelli clocked 31:52.02.
CU returns to the track next weekend at High Point.
