Concord Claims Runner-Up at Home Meet

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's track & field team was second at the Concord Open Friday at Callaghan Stadium.

The Mountain Lions tallied 114 points and was edged by Bluefield State who scored 126 points.

Among the top performances were four individual event wins for Concord.

In the 5,000-meter run, CU secured the top four spots and five of the top eight.

Junior Bramley Childress ran a career-best time of 15:11.98 to win the event. Sophomore Brandon Canaday had a season-best time of 15:26.73 in second. Freshman Johnny Walkup came through in 15:51.34 for third, and junior Andrew Tickle had a showing of 16:07.24 in fourth. Fellow junior Wes Holcomb was eighth as he recorded a season-best time of 17:36.69.

In his first individual race of the outdoor season, redshirt freshman Dom Collins sped down the straightaway in a time of 10.68 seconds in the 100-meter dash to pick up a victory. Senior Richard Henry was fourth as he clocked 11.02 seconds.

Freshman Myles Gurnee ran his personal record in the 400-meter hurdles as he stopped the clock at 57.18 seconds to win. And rounding out the wins for Concord was sophomore Reese Hickey in the 800-meter run as he clocked 2:00.04.

Sophomore Jaedan Holstein was a scorer in the 800-meters as he finished eighth in a time of 2:05.68, a season best.

Concord piled up several points in the field events as the top finishers were junior Shawn Bennett in the discus and sophomore Tobi Adebulu in the pole vault. Bennett marked 35.53 meters in the discus to place third. Adebulu was also third in the pole vault (3.45 meters).

Sophomore Daminn Cunningham and Adebulu were fourth and fifth in the high jump with Cunningham clearing 1.80 meters and Adebulu going over 1.75 meters.

Cunningham had two more top-five finishes in the long jump and triple jump. He had a season-best distance of 6.53 meters in the long jump to place fifth. He had a leap of 12.73 meters in the triple jump to secure fifth. Additionally, sophomore Dallas Ford was eighth in the long jump (6.42 meters).

Bennett was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 11.62 meters.

CU's 4x400-meter relay team was second in a season-best showing of 3:38.50. The team consisted of Gurnee, Holstein, freshman William Jackson and sophomore Aaron Miller.

Jackson was fifth in the open 400-meter dash in a season-best time of 50.67 seconds. Miller also clocked a season-best time of 51.30 seconds as he placed seventh.

The 4x100-meter relay squad of senior Andrew Beohler, Cunningham, Ford and Henry finished third with a time of 43.84 seconds.

Concord will be back at action April 18 at the Jasmine Claggett Invite hosted by West Virginia Wesleyan.
