ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University women's basketball team plays the first of two consecutive home games 2:00 p.m. Saturday when it welcomes Notre Dame to the Carter Center for a Mountain East Conference contest.

QUICK HANDS
In Wednesday's setback at Alderson Broaddus, the Mountain Lions tied their season high with 12 steals. Senior guard

Alexis Phillips accounted for more than half the steals. Blankenship tied her career with four steals while also scoring a season-best 13 points against the Battlers. Phillips had a career-high three steals, and senior forward
Lauryn Avery added two steals. CU is averaging nine steals per game, fifth in the MEC. Individually, junior guard
Nakaila Gray is eighth in the MEC with 2.0 steals per game. In last year's December meeting with Notre Dame, Blankenship set her initial career high with four steals. Junior guard
Jaisah Smith added two more steals as Concord had nine total.
BOARD BATTLE
Concord outrebounded Alderson Broaddus 44-38 as it elevated its rebounding margin for the season to +1.8, fourth best in the conference. Phillips and freshman forward
Abbie Smith led the way on the glass Wednesday night. Both players ripped down 12 rebounds which also tied both players' career highs. A. Smith added her second double-double of the season with 14 points. Phillips set her career best with 12 rebounds in last season's 56-50 home win over Notre Dame. At AB, J. Smith matched her season high with seven rebounds while also tying her season best with 14 points. CU will have a decided advantage on the boards versus Notre Dame with the Falcons ranking 10
th in rebounding margin in the MEC (-5.7).
NEXT UP
Over the last two games, Concord's bench has averaged 27.5 points. The Maroon and Gray reserves posted a season-best 35 points at West Virginia State as A. Smith (10) and Gray (nine) combined for 19 of the points. J. Smith came off the bench for the first time this season Wednesday against Alderson Broaddus to help pace the bench scoring—14 of 22 points. Phillips adding six points to go with her 12 rebounds and three steals in 29 minutes as a reserve—also the first time coming off the bench this season for the Pulaksi, Virginia native.
CLOSE CALLS
Concord and Notre Dame met in last season's MEC Tournament Quarterfinals with the Falcons securing a 69-59 win. The 10-point margin snapped a streak of five straight games between Concord and Notre Dame being decided by six points or less. The Mountain Lions won last season at home after NDC grabbed an 82-78 double overtime win in December over Concord. J. Smith had a then career-high 23 points. Both teams were held to 31 percent shooting, but CU was a crucial 18-of-20 at the foul line in January's win over the Falcons. Notre Dame was slightly better than the Maroon and Gray from the field in its win, shooting 42.9 percent compared to 40.8 for CU. Both teams also shot under 40 percent in the postseason meeting.
THIRD MEETING
Last March was the first time that Concord and Notre Dame met in a tournament setting. It also marked the third straight season that the Mountain Lions played in the 4 vs. 5 game in the MEC Quarterfinals. Junior guard
Maddie Ratcliff came off the bench and led CU in scoring with 16 points and added six rebounds in 30 minutes. J. Smith just missed a double-double as she went for eight points and nine rebounds. The Mountain Lions had a slight 38-34 rebounding margin. Graduate guard
Maggie Guynn netted eight points in the final game of the 2021-22 season.
OPPORTUNITY AWAITS
Concord was to held to 57 points in Wednesday's loss at Alderson Broaddus. However, the Mountain Lions will face a Notre Dame defense that is eighth in the MEC in scoring defense (76.0). And the Falcons are last in the MEC in field-goal percentage defense (45.4) as they are one of two teams in the MEC that gives up 45 percent from the field. CU's defense will have a chance to improve as it ranks seventh in field-goal defense (41.6). But, Notre Dame is ninth in field-goal offense (37.3). NDC has only topped 70 points once this season, the first game of the year in a 92-72 loss to Edinboro.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS
Second-year head coach Imani Gordon has four key returners back from last year's team that went 15-14, including leading scorer Alana Ellis. She ranks eighth in the MEC in scoring (17.2) though Ellis only shoots 36 percent from the floor. She was held to 3-of-20 at Concord last season. Lilee Carlson dropped in 21 points at the Carter Center, and she is averaging 8.2 points per game. Marina Adachi is shooting 41.4 percent (12-for-29) from three-point distance and is netting 9.1 points per game. Two key losses for the Falcons from last season are guard Jada Marone and forward Tamia Ridley.
