THE CLASSIC IS BACK!Â
The Concord Classic returns to the Carter Center on September 11-12 for CU's first home action of 2026. The Mountain Lions have dominated at their home tournaments over the past two seasons, going 4-0 in 2024 and 3-1 in last year's rendition. This year, Concord will face Shaw and Bluefield State once with two matches against Elizabeth City State on the schedule.
RECENT ROUNDS
Concord has played every upcoming opponent outside of ECSU within the last few years. In 2024, Concord took down Pikeville in four sets with senior outside hitter Meg Williams posting 19 kills and senior outside hitter Chloe Thompson notching 17 kills. They also faced Shaw in 2024, falling in five sets at the Mount Olive Invite despite 28 assists from senior setter Paige Richmond. Â
OWNING MERCER COUNTY
This weekend, the Mountain Lions approach a potential five-game winning streak against Bluefield State, winning the previous four head-to-head matches against the Big Blues. Concord dominated the BSU defense with an average of 49.25 kills per game. With the Mountain Lions only losing two sets total during their four recent encounters, Concord strives to stay on top of Mercer County.Â
INCHING CLOSER
This group of seniors continues to climb the all-time rankings in the CU volleyball history book. Williams is just ten kills away from becoming top-three in program history. She currently holds down the fourth spot with 1,216 total kills. Senior libero Allie Davis overtook the number three spot in the career digs leaderboard, now tallying 1,753 digs. She is just 36 digs away from securing the second spot for the Maroon and Gray.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Pikeville is playing some good volleyball to start the 2026 season, posting a 6-3 record. Cassidy Rivas leads the Bears, averaging 3.33 kills per set.
Shaw has not gotten off to a dream start, losing the first eight matches of the season. Following a 14-11 record in 2025, the Bears will look to turn it around and get back in the win column this week.
Bluefield State has only played in five matches thus far, holding a 3-2 record ahead of the Concord Classic. Soniya Garner returns after 274 kills a season ago to lead the BSU attack.
The Vikings of ECSU are coming off their second win of the season, a five-setter against West Chester, but they are looking to turn around the season this weekend. Kendall Washington is having a red-hot start to the year, averaging 3.03 kills per set. The junior has 53 more kills than any other Viking.
