Jayson Gee Named Head Men's Basketball Coach

ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University Athletic Director Luke Duffy and Concord University President Dr. Bethany Meighen have announced the hiring of Jayson Gee as the 16^th head coach of the Concord University men's basketball program.

A formal press conference to introduce Gee is set for 1:00 p.m. Wednesday inside the Carter Center on Christie/Cox Court. The press conference is open the public and everyone is invited to attend.

The press conference will also be streamed on mountaineast.tv/concord.edu

Gee returns to the state of West Virginia where he enjoyed his best run as a head coach at the University of Charleston from 1996-2003. Gee was most recently on the support staff for Jerome Tang at Kansas State during the 2025-26 season.

Along with Gee's duties as the head men's basketball coach at Concord, he will also assume a role as a special assistant to President Meighen.

During his seven-year stint at the University of Charleston, Gee compiled a record of 160-53, winning 75 percent of his games. Gee won two regular season championships at UC (2000, 2001). Gee's 2001 team swept through the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) by winning the tournament championship as well, the second of two postseason titles for the Golden Eagles on Gee's watch—they also won the 1999 tournament. From 1999-02, Charleston made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances under Gee's guidance. Gee's teams were consistently ranked in the Top 25 in Division II National polls and finished the season as the number one seed in the region while hosting the NCAA Tournament at the University of Charleston. Gee coached the National player of the year, Ajamu Gaines, and was selected WVIAC Coach of the Year and Regional Coach of the year during his tenure. 
 
"Myself and Drew (Meighen) and President Meighen are aligned heart wise and aligned relational which made this a unique situation," Gee said. "The Meighens are someone that I consider family. Drew was a faithful assistant during my time at Charleston and we won a lot of games.
 
"When I got on (the Concord) campus for the first time, to see the intentionality and the organization of the entire visit and to talk to people outside of Dr. Meighen's presence I said to myself, "Wow,'" Gee explained. Learning the needs of our gifts consistent with Dr. Meighen's vision this role was exactly what Lynette, my Queen, prayed for."
 
After leaving Charleston, Gee spent three seasons as an assistant at St. Bonaventure, a Division I school in Olean, New York.
 
One of Gee's most successful tenures as a Division I assistant came from 2006-2013 at Cleveland State working for Gary Waters. The Vikings had four 20-win seasons, including a 27-win campaign in 2010-11. Gee was on staff for three NIT appearances (2008, 2011, 2012) and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009. Gee was responsible for recruiting six-year NBA veteran Norris Cole to CSU.
 
Gee's second stop as a head coach was at Longwood from 2013-18.

When you see us, you are going to feel that energy. The D is for discipline. We're going to do things to a standard and do them the right way. We're going to discipline our mind, discipline our tongue and discipline our body.

Gee has been on notable staffs as an assistant at Winthrop (2018-19) where he worked alongside current Louisville coach Pat Kelsey, the University of Cincinnati (2019-21), Western Carolina (2021-2024) and Coastal Carolina (2024-25).

Gee is very active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as well as the Nation of Coaches, an organization that works with players and coaches around college basketball to help make the connection between character and sport—equipping and encouraging them with the resources they need to build young men of high character.
 
In 2015, he received the John Lotz Barnabas Award from FCA, given to the College Basketball Head Coach who best exemplifies a commitment to Christ, integrity, encouragement to others and a balanced life. It also recognizes those who empower and encourage others, often called the "Barnabas" award for reflecting encouragement. 
 
Gee is a 1988 graduate of Charleston where he was a standout player for the Golden Eagles. He was a two-time captain and during his career UC went 92-30 under legendary head coach Tex Williams. He ranks third in Charleston history in rebounds (844) and games played (122). He was a 2003 inductee into the UC hall of Fame.
 
Gee earned a master's degree from Ohio University in 2003 in sport science.
 
In a program of stability, Gee is just the fifth head coach for CU men's basketball since 1977.
 
Gee and his wife, Lynette, have three sons Brandon, Bryan and Terrence, and a daughter, Briana. The Gee's also added an additional member to the family recently, a granddaughter, Kaylynn Gee, born April 24, 2026.
