DAWSONS WORLD
In sweeping West Virginia Wesleyan over the weekend, the Mountain Lions collected 34 hits in the final three games of the series, and 37 hits in hits during the four games. CU tallied 12 hits in the second game before adding 11 hits in each of the final two games of the series. This weekend marked just the third time this spring that Concord has had double-digit hits in three straight games. Twelve of the 37 hits went for extra bases as the Mountain Lions hit seven doubles and smacked five home runs. Senior outfielder
Dawson Gragg tied the single-game program record with three doubles in game two—he is one of seven players in program history with a three-double game that includes current player, senior infielder
Matthew DiSanti. Gragg also had a three-run home in game one. Junior infielder
Dawson Maynard hit a walk-off grand slam in game one in CU's 8-4 win—it was the first walk-off grand slam for the Mountain Lions since April 2021 against Fairmont State.
PRIME PITCHING
Concord's pitching staff did a stellar job over the weekend by holding West Virginia Wesleyan to five or fewer runs in all four games. Additionally, CU only allowed the Bobcats to score in three of the final 14 innings of the series. Sophomore pitcher
Kaden Varela-Payne tied his career high with nine strikeouts over five innings Saturday afternoon. Senior pitcher
Kerry Collins rolled up a new career high in strikeouts with six. Out of the bullpen, senior pitcher
Logan Darrow earned his second win of the season by tossing 3.2 shutout innings Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, graduate pitcher
Joseph Hastings has now thrown six consecutive scoreless innings over his last six appearances. Hastings appeared in three games against Wesleyan, and did not allow a hit. Freshman pitcher
Elijah Green recorded his first career save in game three of the series.
HOLD 'EM DOWN
Tuesday is the second of two meetings between Concord and Emory & Henry this season after the Wasps won the March 31 contest, 16-6. The Mountain Lions, however, have not lost since, winning eight straight games. Offensively, junior infielder
Nick DiSanti notched three hits at E&H two weeks ago. Sophomore utility
Braylen Baker and senior infielder
Sam Stowe each tallied two RBI. And senior catcher
Austin Hear hit his first home run of the season at Emory & Henry. On the mound, CU did get a scoreless inning from freshman pitcher
Rocco Fizzano, who also worked a scoreless frame Sunday afternoon.
HOME SWEE HOME
Tuesday will be the tenth all-time meeting between Concord and Emory & Henry. CU leads the all-time series 5-4, and has had much more success at home where the Maroon and Gray is 3-1. Last February at Anderson Field, the Mountain Lions broke open a 5-5 tie with a six-run bottom of the eighth before holding on for an 11-8 victory. Senior outfielder
Korbin Bostic went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. The DiSanti brothers, Matt and Nick, both had two-hit games. Bostic has two home runs in his career versus E&H.
SCOUTING THE WASPS
Kyle Fields, Emory & Henry's RBI leader with 41, notched three RBI in the win for the Wasps two weeks ago. Rhett Barker had a three-hit day that included a grand slam and five RBI. Ky Gregoire (.364) and Jadden Rodriguez (.363) are both hitting north of .360. Fields bats .346 on the year. Emory & Henry's pitching staff ERA is at 11.00. The Wasps are coming off getting swept in three games by nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne over the weekend.
