ACE IS THE PLACE
Sophomore pitcher Kaden Varela-Payne has been one of the most dominant arms in the MEC this season and this past weekend was no different. Varela-Payne tossed his fourth complete game and first shutout of the season in the 7-0 victory over Davis & Elkins last Friday. The Raleigh, North Carolina native surrendered just four hits and one walk, while punching out eight Senators in the win. This performance earned Varela-Payne his fourth MEC Pitcher of the Week award. Payne's shutout was the first solo shutout for a Concord pitcher since May 2019 On the season, Varela-Payne leads the MEC in strikeouts (57) and is second in innings pitched (53.2).

SHOT OUT OF A CANNON
Concord got a big boost from freshman outfielder Lucas Cannon in the 4-0 series sweep of Davis & Elkins. Cannon started all four contests for the Mountain Lions which were the first four starts of his collegiate career. The Fountain Inn, South Carolina native went 5-for-8 with at least one hit in every game. Cannon picked up his first career RBI in the series, came around to score five runs and drew five free passes on the weekend. Where Cannon has been electric all season is on the base paths. Cannon leads CU with 12 stolen bases and has only been thrown out one time. His 12 stolen bases rank seventh  in the MEC.

STAY HOT
The Mountain Lions are coming off a season sweep at Davis & Elkins, the first four-game sweep of an opponent since April 2024 against West Virginia Wesleyan. The Mountain Lion offense was consistent against D&E, scoring 33 runs. The pitching staff held up their end of the bargain as well by limiting D&E to 13 runs. Here were some of the key performers, starting with senior infielder Matthew DiSanti. DiSanti posted back to back 2-for-3 games in games three and four. It was the DiSanti's 10th and 11th multi-hit games of the year. Senior outfielder Korbin Bostic had an excellent series finale, going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI and mashing his sixth home run of the year. Senior outfielder Dawson Gragg tallied his second four-hit game of the season in the second game at D&E. On the mound, freshman pitcher Jonah Adams secured his first career win going 6.1 innings and just giving up a single run. Junior pitcher Jake Robinson was excellent out of the pen. In two appearances, Robinson went a combined 2.1 scoreless innings, allowed just two hits and struck out four Senators. Robinson also earned his third career save to close out the series with a Concord sweep.

TAKE THE SERIES
With the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats coming to Athens this weekend, the Mountain Lions will try to extend their home winning streak over WVWC which currently stands at 12 games—Concord has swept Wesleyan three straight times at home, 2019, 2022 and 2024. However, Concord and WVWC split the series 2-2 in Buckhannon last year. While CU led in run differential 15-10, both pitching staffs performed well across four games. Senior pitcher Logan Darrow worked an eight-inning complete game, allowing just two runs as the Mountain Lion offense put up six in the top of the eighth to win the series opener, 8-2. In game three, Concord secured a 6-3 win behind a great relief effort from senior pitcher Kerry Collins. Collins threw three innings of shutout ball to close out the game. Robinson was a tough-luck loser in game four as he only allowed one run over five innings in the Bobcats' 1-0 victory.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
While having just a 9-25 overall record, West Virginia Wesleyan have been playing some good baseball as of late. The Bobcats are coming off of two straight wins over West Virginia State to split the series with the Yellow Jackets. Offensively, WVWC is led by junior infielder Grant Shumaker and sophomore outfielder Dylan Neach. They both have five doubles and are hitting just below .300 on the year with Neach adding three homers. On the bump, the Hernandez brothers lead the way for WVWC. Anthony Hernandez posts a 5.48 ERA with an MEC leading 58.1 innings pitched. Alex Hernandez has a team-leading 31 strikeouts for the Bobcats.
