Hammonds Shines on Day One of MEC Indoor Championships, Concord In Eighth

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's track & field team is eighth through one day of competition at the Mountain East Conference Indoor Championships being contested at the Chris Cline Track Complex.

The Mountain Lions scored 13 points, just four points back of sixth-place Davis & Elkins.

The best performance on day one came from sophomore Cassidy Hammonds who scored a career-best 3,369 points in the pentathlon. She eclipsed her own scored school by more than 400 points. The point total is among the top 50 in Division II this season.

Hammonds broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles (9.27 seconds) during the pentathlon as she surpassed Meagan Savioli's record of 9.40 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles from 2011.

Hammonds finished third or better in all five events of the pentathlon as she scored 854 points in the hurdles, 753 points in the 800-meter run (2:25.27) and 723 points in the long jump (5.58 meters).

In the open long jump, Hammonds soared to a mark of 5.71 meters which is a school record. She finished third in the event.

The only other scoring event for the Mountain Lions on Saturday was the distance medley relay. The quartet of junior Piper Doughton, junior Charlotte McGinnis, junior Sara Turner and sophomore Jenna Webb ran 13:38.90 in eighth place.

Field events begin Sunday at 11:30 a.m. with track events slated for 4:10 p.m. in the second and final day of the MEC Indoor Championships.
