GET ON THE GLASS
In each of its last two games, CU has held a +10 rebounding margin against Point Park and Fairmont State. On particular note, Fairmont State entered Monday's contest as the best rebounding team in the MEC with a margin approaching +8.0 for the season. However, Concord ended the night with a 50-40 advantage on the glass. Junior forward
Boubacar Djigo finished the game right at his season rebounding average with 13 boards while fellow junior forward
Eldon Terry grabbed nine rebounds in 13 minutes before fouling out. And a third junior forward
Anfernee Hanna tied his career high with seven rebounds. CU's 50 rebounds were the second most this season, only trailing the 51 rebounds it tore down at Wheeling January 14. And the Mountain Lions had 19 offensive rebounds versus FSU which was also second most on the season, only behind 23 at Wheeling in mid-January.
RUN THEM OFF THE LINE
As one of the most potent offenses in the MEC, Fairmont State averages more than 11 three-pointers made per game. However, the CU defense stood tall and only allowed 14 attempts from three-point range by the Fighting Falcons. And the three FSU made three-pointers were tied for the fewest this season by Fairmont State. Over the last four games, the Mountain Lions have allowed eight or fewer made three-pointers, including two at Bluefield State last Monday and three to FSU. Perhaps, Concord's best defensive effort from three-point range came earlier this season at West Virginia Wesleyan when CU held the Bobcats to 2-for-13 from three-point range. Concord has limited the opponent to six or fewer made three-pointers 10 times this winter.
BEYOND THE ARC BINGE
While the Concord defense held West Virginia Wesleyan to two three-pointers January 7, the Mountain Lions were hot from three-point range on the offensive end. CU tied its season high with 15 made three-pointers inside the Rockefeller Center. The 51.7 percent that the Maroon and Gray hit on from three-point distance was one of two times this year that CU made 50 percent of its three-point tries. Junior guard
Khamani Wertz connected on four triples, his most in a Concord uniform. Hanna and sophomore guards
Brendan Hoffman and
Josiah Rickards each made two three-pointers. And in the last four minutes of the game, redshirt freshman guard
Riley Clevenger hit two three-pointers. The Mountain Lions are 6-1 this season when they make at least 10 three-pointers, the latest win was last Wednesday at Salem in overtime.
KEEP IT MOVING
Part of Concord's success from three-point range was due in part to the Mountain Lions registering a season-best 26 assists at West Virginia Wesleyan. Wertz led all players with six assists as he matched WVWC's team total for the game. Wertz only turned the ball once against the Bobcats and is fourth this season in the MEC in assist-to-turnover ratio, 2.2. Wertz is coming off a game against Fairmont State where he dished out five assists. Hanna and Rickards each had four assists in the contest at Wesleyan. Nine different players recorded at least one assist against the Bobcats in the first meeting this season. The Mountain Lions are 9-4 this year when they hand out at least 12 assists.
SECONDS
Concord is the only team in the MEC averaging more than 14 offensive rebounds per game with 14.2. CU is 13
th in Division II in offensive rebounding. Individually, Djigo is second in nation in offensive rebounds per game (4.6). West Virginia Wesleyan gives up 12.6 offensive rebounds per contest and has the worst rebounding margin in the MEC at -8.6. This season, the Mountain Lions are turning their 14 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points per game, and CU has scored double-digit second-chance points in seven straight games, including 21 in back-to-back games versus Salem and Point Park last week. Due to shooting nearly 55 percent from the floor at WVWC in January, Concord only had 11 offensive rebounds that turned into 14 second-chance points. Four of the seven rebounds by Terry at Wesleyan were on the offensive end.
BEATING THE BOBCATS
The Mountain Lions go for their 13
th straight win over West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday as the streak dates back to a February 2020 win at the Carter Center. Though CU eased its way to a 97-62 victory in Buckhannon earlier this year, the second meeting last year between the two sides required overtime before CU pulled out an 89-87 victory. Of the six victories during the streak that have come in Athens, all of those have seen the Mountain Lions win by at least 14 points, including a 94-77 victory last January. Djigo had five points and seven rebounds versus the Bobcats in the last home meeting, and earlier this season, the Cleveland, Ohio native logged one of his 14 double-doubles on the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds at WVWC. With the 12-game win streak, CU has taken a 42-36 all-time series advantage against the Bobcats.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
7.2- Terry's rebounding average over the last four games.
35- Concord's margin of victory at Wesleyan was the largest in a game since December 2016 versus Bluefield State.
54.5- Season-high field-goal percentage for the Mountain Lions at WVWC in January.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Nine different players have started at least six games for the Bobcats this season. Isaiah Baker leads WVWC in scoring at 11.3 points per game as he has started 19 games. Curtis Litton is adding 10.3 points per game. Jerell Jean-Baptiste has made an impact in the 10 games he has played, netting 32 points against West Virginia State January 17, and tossing in 22 points versus Davis & Elkins a week later. West Virginia Wesleyan is 0-10 in true road games this season with home wins over WVSU and Salem.
