FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Graduate quarterback
Devin Kargman and freshman kicker
Christian Torres of the Concord University football team have earned weekly honors from the Mountain East Conference, the league office released Monday afternoon.
Kargman was voted as the MEC Offensive Player of the Week while Torres was selected as the MEC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this year. The MEC Players of the Week are presented by The Health Plan.
Kargman, a native of Camden, New Jersey, threw for 401 yards and six touchdowns on just 16 completions as he went 16-for-20 through the air at West Virginia State in CU's 73-49 win over the Yellow Jackets. Kargman's yardage total and touchdowns were both career highs. Four of the six touchdown passes for Kargman went for at lest 60 yards as he had scoring strikes of 15, 39, 62, 70, 72 and 73 yards. The CU signal caller became the second quarterback in program history with at least six touchdowns in a game as he is now tied for second in MEC history for touchdown passes in a single game.
For Torres, the offensive success of the Mountain Lions allowed him to become the sixth kicker in MEC history with 10 extra points in game. The Brock, Texas native was successful on all 10 point after tries while connecting on a 50-yard field goal in the second quarter—it was just the third field goal in program history of 50 yards or more. He added three touchbacks on kickoffs.
Fairmont State's Jeffrey Polk was the MEC Defensive Player of the Week, joining Kargman and Torres for the MEC Weekly Awards.
Concord welcomes Glenville State to Callaghan Stadium 2:00 p.m. Saturday for Homecoming in Athens.
