GET HOT HOFFMAN
In Concord's 102-91 loss at Charleston Wednesday night, sophomore guard
Brendan Hoffman provided a big spark off the bench as he tallied a career-high 21 points in a season-high 29 minutes off the bench. Hoffman did a bulk of his damage in the second half as he scored 17 of his 21 points after halftime as he was off the floor for less than a minute in the second half. The Charleston, West Virginia native finished 6-for-10 from the floor and 7-for-7 at the foul line as he also added a pair of steals. In his last two games in his home county of Kanawha, Hoffman has scored 21 points and 20 points, respectively, while shooting 19-for-25 in two games against Charleston and West Virginia State. Over his last four games, Hoffman is 17-for-19 at the foul line and has also recorded seven steals.
MARCH TO THE LINE
The free-throw stripe played a big part in Concord erasing an 18-point, first-half deficit at Charleston before taking the lead in the second half. CU finished 26-for-28 at the foul line Wednesday night which is good enough for 92.9 percent. The Mountain Lions raised their season shooting percentage to 77.2 percent at the charity stripe. Along with Hoffman going 7-of-7 on free throws, junior guard
Anfernee Hanna was 6-for-6 as he vaulted to third in the MEC in free-throw shooting (82.9 percent/68-for-82). Though he does not qualify, freshman
Micah Young is shooting 86.7 percent (39-for-45) at the foul line this season. Hoffman has posted an 85.7 percent showing at the free-throw line while sophomore guard
Josiah Rickards is 80 percent (44-for-55), eighth in the MEC. The last time Concord shot 90 percent or better at the charity stripe with at least 20 attempts was last February at Point Park when CU finished 18-for-20.
FIVE FOR FIVE
Wednesday night marked the second time in three games and the fourth time overall this season that Concord has put five players in double figures. Along with Hoffman's outburst, Young continued his strong play with 17 points—the fourth consecutive game with 10 or more points for the Westerville, Ohio native. Hanna netted 16 points. Junior guard
Khamani Wertz had a season-best and Concord career high with 14 points and junior forward
Boubacar Djigo went for 10 points and 16 rebounds for his MEC-leading 11
th double-double of the season. The five players combined to go 24-for-48 from the field and were responsible for 24 of Concord's 28 made free throws in the game. CU had won their previous 19 games, dating back to February 25, 2023, when five or more players finished in double figures.
REVENGE GAME
The Mountain Lions have dropped two of the last three homes games against Glenville State after losing 96-78 at home last season and the aforementioned February 25 game during the 2022-23 season, 85-81. CU and Glenville State have split the last four meetings as it was the road team winning on the other's home floor in 2024-25. Concord picked up a 92-85 win at GSU's Waco Center last January. Rickards came off the bench with 11 points as he finished 6-for-6 from the foul line. Sophomore forward
Kraig Gilbert added nine points and six rebounds. The Mountain Lions survived 13 Pioneer three-pointers, but held GSU to 38.4 percent shooting overall. Last March, Concord hit on 43.8 percent of its field-goal attempts, but could not hold Glenville State down. Hoffman tallied 13 points and four assists in 24 minutes off the bench. Djigo just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes.
BIG MAN BATTLE
One matchup to watch Friday night will be Djigo going up against Glenville State five man Prince Mosengo. Djigo leads the MEC in rebounding at 13.1 per game, which is also second in Division II. Mosengo pulls down an average of 8.8 rebounds per game which ranks second in the conference. Djigo has had seven games or at least 15 rebounds this season. Mosengo has posted five double-doubles this season, including a 16-point, 18-rebound game in mid-November. Mosengo has a slight edge on Djigo in field-goal percentage even though both players are in the top five in the MEC. Mosengo shoots 63 percent from the floor, second in the conference, while Djigo is 59.7 percent, good enough fourth. And both players are a threat from three-point distance. Djigo has made at least one three-pointer in six of the last eight games. Mosengo has only attempted eight triples this year, but has converted on four.
PROTECT THE 3
Glenville State is one of Division II's best in made three-pointers this season, averaging 11.2 per game which is third in the nation. The Pioneers have four players with at least 25 made three-pointers this winter, led Jalen Knott who has sunk 56 three-pointers which is second in the conference. GSU's 36.8 percent from beyond the arc is fourth in the MEC. Over the last stretch of games, Concord has done a yeoman's job of containing the opposition from three-point range. CU has held four of the last six opponents to less than 40 percent on triple tries. Offensively, the Mountain Lions have seen an uptick in three-point production. In the last nine games Concord has made at least nine three-pointers eight times.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
21- Points off the bench for Hoffman at Charleston was the most for a CU reserve this season.
54- Concord has shot at least 54 percent in three of the last four halves versus Glenville State.
55- Second-half points at Charleston were tied for the third most in a single half this year for the Mountain Lions.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Knott and Elijah Redfern make up one of the best backcourts in the MEC. Knott is averaging 17.6 points per game which is third in the conference while Redfern's 17.5 points are fourth in the MEC. Redfern is coming off a 31-point game in Glenville State's 88-71 win at West Virginia State Wednesday. Don Colon-Lewis is netting 12.0 points per game while Ammar Maxwell adds 10.6 points per contest. The Pioneers have a tight seven-man rotation with only the rotation guys playing in all 17 games this season. Knott, Colon-Lewis and Mosengo all play at lest 32 minutes a game.
