ATHENS, W.Va. – With so many new faces around the Carter Center for the 2025-26 school year, the Concord Sports Information Department will be highlighting all full-time employees in a Get to Know series throughout the first few weeks of the new athletic year.

Whether those friendly faces have been in Athens for five days or five decades, you'll know more about everyone in the Concord Athletic Department.

Name: Morgan Mitchell
Position: Assistant Women's Basketball Coach
College Alma Mater: University of Dubuque (Bachelor's & Master's)
Year(s) at Concord: Less than a year

How did you land at Concord?
I was on the hunt for a new job, looking to expand my coaching toolbox and through NCAA job market I found the opening at Concord!

Tell us a little bit about where you're from?
I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Thanks to the Packers, we consider ourselves a bigger city, but the population definitely doesn't match that. That's what I always loved about Green Bay. It had the city vibe if you went one direction, there was a suburb vibe in the middle and if you went the other direction you were met with fields and homegrown, family farms. Wisconsin in general had that feel to it honestly. I root hard for my Wisconsin teams, especially the Milwaukee Brewers.

What's been your most rewarding experience as an athlete or coach?
As a coach, I LOVE seeing my athletes succeed and reach their goals. Watching them accomplish small tasks on the basketball court that they may have been struggling with, working with them one-on-one and getting to know them as people outside of who they are as an athlete, and most importantly watching them walk across the stage on graduation day. It is so rewarding to know that I am a small piece of their success story and that they get to keep growing and achieving after playing collegiate basketball!

Outside of family, who's had the biggest positive influence on your life?
I have a huge circle of support around me at all times. I grew up going to small Christian schools all of my life and it is so cool to see that my 1st/2nd grade teacher, my friends' moms, and even my siblings' friends' moms still cheer me on in life. I had a lot of good and influential people in my life from a very young age. Aside from looking up to both my parents all of my life & being extremely close and proud of my siblings, my husband is my biggest positive influence in my life. He is always there supporting me, picking me up when I have a bad day, encouraging me and cheering me on. He never lets my feelings go unnoticed and allows me to be exactly who I am at all times with no judgement and all love.

What makes Concord such a special place?
From my short time at Concord, I have noticed how positive and healthy the atmosphere is around here. On my on-campus interview in the summer I met so many people who just wanted to help and be apart of the day. When I accepted the job and moved here, my first day was the same way. I think I met everyone in the athletic department on my first day because they were all willing to go out of their way to say hi and introduce themselves. I have heard the word "family" a lot and I wouldn't say it is overused because it has a place here. You can tell that everyone is so supportive of everyone else not just at Concord, but also in their personal lives as well.

Favorite vacation spot?
I wouldn't say I have a 'go to' vacation spot, since our vacations used to revolve around family summer athletic schedules, which means we went to new places every year. My aunt and uncle have a lake house up north in Wisconsin and I would say that is my favorite spot even if it isn't necessarily for vacation. Just a quick get away to spend time on the lake, with friends and family is my favorite place to be!

Go-to junk food?
Have you ever had those little mini cookie dough bites? YUM! (If you haven't had them you should definitely try them!) They are my go-to movie snack!

What advice would you give today's college student that you found the most valuable?
Dream big, set your goals high and give yourself grace on the ride there. Don't waste time under achieving, set yourself up for success and know that it is going to be a process that will be well worth it in the end. Have fun along the way and know that everyone's timelines are different, so don't compare yourself to anyone.

What's one bucket list item that you have crossed off and are most proud of?
I haven't completely checked it off yet, but I have a huge goal to visit every MLB stadium. I've visited a handful, which I would say is a bucket list process because getting to see those stadiums means I'm checking off part of the bucket list item each time!
