BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Sophomore
Cassidy Hammonds of the Concord University women's track & field team has been selected as the Mountain East Conference Athlete of the Week, presented by The Health Plan, the league office released Monday afternoon.
Hammonds, a native of Lee, Virginia, shares the honor this week with Point Park's Dunya Van den Tooren.
In the opening indoor meet of the season, Hammonds scored 2,918 points in the pentathlon as she finished eighth in a largely Division I field at Liberty. Only one Division II athlete was ahead of Hammonds. In the five-event sequence, Hammonds scored 773 points in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.68 seconds. She added 639 points in the 800-meter run as she clocked 2:34.40.
Hammonds also went over 600 points in the long jump with a mark of 5.15 meters which netted 601 points. She scored 491 points in the high jump (1.38 meters). Additionally, Hammonds set a personal best in the shot put with a mark of 8.22 meters (414 points).
Hammonds' point total was less than 50 points off her current school record of 2,967.
CU is off from action until January 23-24 when it returns to Liberty for the Liberty Open.
