MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Concord University women's track & field team is in sixth after the second day of competition at the Mountain East Conference Outdoor Championships wrapped up Monday evening at Mylan Park.
Concord has 24.5 points in the meet.
Sophomore
Cassidy Hammonds successfully defended her MEC crown in the heptathlon Monday afternoon. Heading into day two of the seven-event sequence, Hammonds trailed Charleston's Laura Delgado de Torres by 37 points. After scoring 570 points in the long jump with a leap of 5.04 meters, Hammonds overtook Delgado de Torres in the heptathlon with a javelin mark of 36.95 meters (609 points) then held off Wheeling's Fenne Sienaert in the 800-meter run to win by seven points, 4,570-4,563. Hammonds clocked 2:23.61 in the 800-meters to score 775 points, her second highest score—she had 809 points in the 200-meter dash Sunday.
Sophomore
Cierra Parker recorded 3.5 points in the high jump with a fifth-place finish. She cleared 1.60 meters. Hammonds picked up three points for CU in the open long jump with a mark of 5.42 meters and a fifth-place finish.
Junior
Kiley Smich was 15th in the long jump. Freshman
Avery Lilly went over a personal-best clearance of 2.25 meters in the pole vault to finish 12th.
Smich added a career-best time of 1:00.96 in the 400-meter dash prelims as she placed 11th. Freshman
Violet Wall placed 10th in the 800-meter run prelims with a showing of 2:18.58.
Tuesday's competition gets going 12:00 p.m. as all running events will be a final on the last day of the championships.Â
