Abbie Smith of the Concord University women's basketball team has been named Mountain East Conference Co-Player of the Week, presented by The Health Plan, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

Smith put together two stellar performances against West Virginia State and Charleston, powering Concord to a 2-0 start in MEC play.

In the conference opener against the Yellow Jackets, the Little Hocking, Ohio native posted 22 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks in the 80-74 win. In the win at WVSU, Smith finished 9-for-10 at the foul line. When facing off versus the Golden Eagles, Smith netted 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, going 10-for-17 from the field. She added a nine-point, 11-rebound game at Ferrum last Monday.

Through eight games Smith is top 10 in the MEC in scoring at 18.6 points per game (second), rebounding with 10.9 rebounds per game (first), field goal percentage of 57.7 (first), free-throw percentage of 81.4 (ninth), and blocks per game (1.3/ninth)

Smith is one of two players in the conference to already have a second MEC Player of the Week award, the first coming on the week of November 24th.

The other player earning their second MEC Player of the Week was Fairmont State's Leslie Huffman who was named the other Co-MEC Player of the Week.

Smith and Concord women's basketball square off against Frostburg State at home Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
