DUAL THREAT
In Concord's defeat at Glenville Saturday afternoon, sophomore quarterback
Tyler Mizzell starred through the air as well as on the ground for the Mountain Lions. Mizzell threw for 230 yards to take him over 2,000 passing yards for the season as he now sits at 2,086 yards in 2025. Additionally, Mizzell accounted for 128 yards on the ground on just seven carries. The Denver, North Carolina native became the first CU quarterback to top 100 yards rushing since Ben Nester in 2013 when the converted running back rushed for 159 yards. Mizzell also became CU's first 100-yard rusher in 2025 as he now leads Concord in rushing (221). And Mizzell broke off the Mountain Lions' longest rushing play this fall with a 63-yard touchdown versus the Pioneers. He ranks third in rushing yards among MEC quarterbacks this season, behind Charleston's Ean Hamric and West Virginia State's Kaleb Jackson.
GROUND CHUNKS
Powered by Mizzell's career day running the ball, Concord gained 232 rushing yards in the contest which were the most for the Maroon and Gray since last October versus Glenville State. Even though Mizzell tallied up more than half of CU's rushing yards, redshirt freshman wide receiver
Keyon Concepcion chunked off 28 rushing yards on three carries while junior running back
Maurice Jones had 21 yards on three carries. The 7.7 yards that the Mountain Lions averaged on 30 running plays was the highest average since a 9.1 rushing average versus Charleston in October 2022. For just the second time all season—after the Bluefield State game—CU is averaging more than 100 yards rushing per game (117.9). And Concord is getting a West Virginia Wesleyan defense that allows 251.3 yards per game on the ground.
SPREAD THE WEALTH
Mizzell tied his career high with 24 completions at Glenville State. In his 24 completions, Mizzell found sophomore wide receiver
Que Moore for seven receptions and 99 yards, both career highs, and two touchdowns which was Moore's first career two-touchdown game. Mizzell also completed seven passes to Concepcion which was one shy of his career best. But, five other receivers made at least one catch in the contest. In all seven games this season, the Concord signal caller has completed at least one pass to six or more receivers. CU has four receivers in the top 25 of the MEC in receiving yards, redshirt freshman
Dom Collins (second/579), Concepcion (fifth/441), Moore (seventh/414) and junior
Damani Burrell (25th/186).
PILE 'EM UP
Junior defensive back
Nehemiah Scott racked up a career-high 13 tackles at Glenville State which marked the fifth time this season that the Richmond, Virginia native has netted 10 or more tackles. In the process, Scott surpassed his tackle total from last year of 59. He is tied for fourth in the conference in tackles (63) entering this weekend. Scott's 13-tackle performance is the second such game for a Mountain Lion this fall after sophomore linebacker
Xavier Ellison came up with 13 stops at Frostburg State to start the month. In addition to his 13 tackles, Scott recorded his ninth pass break-up on the season which ties him with senior defensive back
Corey Radcliff for the team lead in passes defended (pass break-ups + interceptions). Both players are in the top 10 nationally in passes defended (nine).
DOWN TO THE WIRE
Concord enters Saturday having won seven straight meetings versus West Virginia Wesleyan, but those wins have come with some late drama. Five of the last seven games have been decided by four points or less. Last year, CU registered a safety with less than a minute left that Scott and now-graduated linebacker
Ryker Brown teamed up for in a 33-31 win over WVWC. In 2022, Concord built a 34-17 halftime lead, but had to hang on for a 34-32 win. Four years ago at Callaghan Stadium, the Mountain Lions were up 28-12 at halftime. However, WVWC outscored CU 13-0 in the second half before missing a 21-yard field goal in the final two minutes of a 28-25 Concord victory. Senior defensive lineman
Jaylen Dollar had a career-best eight tackles at Wesleyan last season while Scott notched six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and an interception.
FAMILIAR FACES
When looking on the sidelines Saturday, both teams will see some familiar coaches on the opposite side. Concord offensive coordinator
Justin Zimmerman is in his first year on head coach
Cody Edwards' staff after spending the 2024 season at West Virginia Wesleyan. And after two seasons away from the college game, former Concord head coach and defensive coordinator Paul Price is back at his alma mater, coordinating the Bobcats' defense. Price was at CU first as a position coach and defensive coordinator from 2009-15 before taking the reins as the head coach of the Mountain Lions from 2016-19. From a player perspective, senior defensive lineman
Michael Herbert started his career at WVWC where he had 21 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss during his freshman season in 2021.
BALL SECURITY
Even though West Virginia Wesleyan is given up north of 250 yards per game on the ground, the Bobcat defense has become one of the best units in the MEC at taking the ball away, specifically finding fumbles. Wesleyan has recovered six fumbles this season which is second in the MEC. Through seven games, Concord has lost five fumbles, including one last week at Glenville State. On the opposite side, WVWC is one of the most prone teams in the conference to throwing interceptions with 13 this year while the Mountain Lions are tied for the conference lead in interceptions (nine), and last week at Glenville State was the first time this year that Concord has not recorded an interception on defense. CU had a pair of interceptions at WVWC last year.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
7- With junior tight end
Damari Heller snagging a 12-yard touchdown at GSU, it was the seventh different receiver to catch a touchdown this season.
31- Concord's second-level defenders have 31 pass break-ups this year which is two away from tying last year's total.
366- Passing yards put up by CU at West Virginia Wesleyan last season.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
The strongest position group for the Bobcats is the defensive line as WVWC leads the conference with 13 sacks this season. Riley Slaughter has three sacks on the year while Keymon Jefferson has 2.5 sacks. Overall, the Bobcats have created 32 negative plays this season, an average of four per game. Offensively, Wesleyan has used three quarterbacks: Jaylen Bragg, Logan Landers and Quinton Pulley. Pulley started last year versus Concord, but it appears Bragg will start Saturday. Slaughter is Wesleyan's leading tackler with 47 stops to go with his three sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss.
