Concord Seeks to Stay Hot in Final Regular Season Games Versus Charleston, Glenville State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team tests its five-game winning streak when it finishes the regular season at Charleston 1:00 p.m. Sunday and home against Glenville State 1:00 p.m. Wednesday in a pair of Mountain East Conference contests.

MEC TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS
A. Concord is guaranteed a top-three seed in the MEC South Division for the upcoming conference tournament that starts November 10.
B. With two Concord wins and a one West Virginia State loss, the Mountain Lions could climb into second place in the MEC South and host a first-round tournament. A third-place finish would makes CU travel for the opening round.
C. Concord could also finish second by going 1-0-1 and West Virginia State losing one of its two remaining games.

FRESHMEN PHENOMS AND SENIOR EXPERIENCE
In its extending its winning streak to five games, the Mountain Lions have scored nine goals over the last two games in wins over West Virginia State and Davis & Elkins. Freshman midfielders Tiana Campbell and Marika Svensson have accounted for five goals. Campbell has tallied back-to-back braces to take her goal total to nine for the season. Meanwhile, Svensson found the back of the net at Davis & Elkins Wednesday which was her eighth goal of the year. Not only did the first-year players step up for CU in recent wins, but senior forward Sydney Tucker and senior defender Leah Fleming continued their strong surge. Tucker netted the game-winning goal for CU with eight seconds remaining versus WVSU—the latest goal for Concord since a 103rd-minute score in the 2019 MEC Semifinals. Tucker leads the MEC in goals with 15 while Fleming has at least one point in four of the last seven games.

STOP THE SKID
Concord has lost five straight games to Charleston dating back to a 1-0 road win in 2022 on a second-half Fleming goal. In late September, CU fell at home to Charleston, 3-0. All three goals came in the second half for the Golden Eagles as Concord held a 10-9 shots advantage. Freshman defender Ella Rowell tallied three shots while junior forward Caitlin Webster registered two shots. The Mountain Lions' last goal versus UC came in the 2022 MEC Quarterfinals in a 2-1 loss.

FINISHING ON THE FRONT FOOT
Wednesday wraps up the regular season when the Maroon and Gray host Glenville State. The Mountain Lions have won all 13 meetings versus Glenville State dating back to 2018. Svensson scored in the 15th, 37th and 81st minutes for her first career hat trick in September's 5-1 win at GSU. Junior midfielder Jessica Neville scored in the first half while freshman forward Taryn Kelly scored just ahead of the first-half buzzer for her first career goal. In last year's home game, CU scored a 6-0 win versus Glenville State. Tucker scored twice while graduate defender Olivia Bekeleski netted a goal.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Charleston carries an impressive seven-game winning streak into action Sunday afternoon. Over those seven games, UC has outscored its opponents 27-3. Juliette Lucas is third in the MEC in goals with 13. Lina Jaime has tallied eight assists which is tops in the MEC. The only home loss for the Golden Eagles came October 6 versus Frostburg State. Cassidy Collins scored in the 56th minute versus Concord in September while Demari Curry tallied goals in the 64th and 76th minutes.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Glenville State is battling West Virginia Wesleyan for the final postseason spot in the MEC South Division. GSU hosts the Bobcats Sunday with a two-point lead for fourth in the standings. Sophia Calkins, Valentina Quiroz and Marcelle Stoller have all scored five goals to pace the offensive attack. Lucia Lopez has been part of six shutouts in goal.
