Inside the Numbers: 2022 Football

ATHENS, W.Va. – As each sports program at Concord University has its season come to a close, the school's sports information department will spotlight each team into the summer in an Inside the Numbers series.

The next sport to be profiled is football. The Mountain Lions collected nine wins, the most for the program in nine years as it finished 9-2. CU was second in the Mountain East Conference as it narrowly missed the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

3- Plays it took the Mountain Lions to score their first touchdown of the season, a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jack Mangel to wide receiver Cayden Chambers at Emory & Henry.

7- Years since Concord had had a 1,000-yard rusher before running back Thurlow Wilkins racked up 1,179 yards on the ground.

39- Touchdowns for Mangel, a single-season program record, and the third most in Division II this past fall.

42- Yards that defensive back John Merica covered on a fumble recovery for a touchdown at West Liberty. CU's first scoop and score since 2019 at Glenville State.

87- Yards that sophomore defensive back Kevin Howard ran back an interception for a touchdown against Wheeling at home. It was Concord's first pick six since 2018 versus Glenville State at home.

102- Receptions by wide receiver Jarod Bowie, the most in Division II in 2022.

116- Yards that the CU defense held Alderson Broaddus in a 50-13 win in November. It was the fewest allowed by a Maroon and Gray defense in a single game in program history.

128- Points that Concord and Charleston combined for in a 68-60 CU win in October, the most combined points in a single game in program history.

487- Yards that the Mountain Lions averaged in 2022, top five in Division II.

735- Offensive yards for Concord in its win over Charleston, a single-game program record and the most in a Division II game in 2022.
