SHUTOUT STREAK
Concord has recorded back-to-back shutouts in 1-0 wins over both Frostburg State and Wheeling to push its record to .500 for the spring season. Freshman goalkeeper
Sean Monro, the reigning MEC Defensive Player of the Week, has stretched his scoreless streak to 226 minutes coming into play Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, his back line defense of freshmen
Sacha Everard and
Vinay Gadde and sophomores
Daniel Haworth and
Jesse Kannekens have only allowed the last two opponents to get off nine shots on goal. Before shutting out Frostburg State March 5, the last clean sheet for CU came September 11, 2019 at West Liberty.
MAKING THE MOST OF AN OPPORTUNITY
While Monro is the MEC Defensive Player of the Week, senior midfielder
Samuel Appiah was voted as the MEC Offensive Player of the Week for his game-winning goal in double overtime at Wheeling. Concord only had two shots on goal against WU, but Appiah headed in a goal off a corner kick to defeat the Cardinals. It was the first double overtime victory for the Maroon and Gray since September 18, 2016 when it defeated West Virginia Wesleyan with less than two minutes to go. For Appiah, he netted his first goal of the season less than two minutes after being subbed in, in the 104
th minute of the contest. Both of Appiah's career goals have been against Wheeling as well as game-winning scores.
BATTLING THE BLACK AND GOLD
Friday will be just the fifth all-time meeting in men's soccer between Concord and West Liberty. CU won the first three games with WLU winning 2-1 in Beckley October 27, 2019. In the first three meetings, the Mountain Lions outscored WLU, 7-1, including the aforementioned shutout in September 2019. Sophomore midfielder
Michael Shelor scored in CU's win last season in his third career game while assisting on Concord's lone goal in West Liberty's victory. Five of the last six home games for the Mountain Lions have been decided by a goal while six of the last eight for West Liberty overall have been decided by a goal, going back to the 2-1 win last year in Beckley.
WEST LIBERTY AT A GLANCE
Despite the Hilltoppers' record, they have played two of the best teams in the MEC in Charleston and Notre Dame. West Liberty only fell to Charleston 2-0, and nearly outshot Notre Dame in a 1-0 loss to the Falcons. The lone win for WLU came at home against rival Wheeling as it scored the game-winning goal with less than a minute left in double overtime. Josh Yeaman has two of the three goals on the season for the Hilltoppers, including the game winner against Wheeling. Â
