Concord Extends Unbeaten Streak to Six Games with 4-0 Win at Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 win at Wheeling Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Bishop Schmitt Field.

The four goals were a season high for the Mountain Lions (6-1-2, 5-1 MEC), and were the most goals scored in a road game in nearly two years.

The lone goal of the first half was a 19th-minute tally by junior forward Lucas Costa who scored for the second straight game on an assist from freshman midfielder Josiah Ochoa.

Despite taking eight of the game's nine shots in the first half, Concord hung onto the one-goal lead at halftime. However, CU wasted little time in the second half in doubling its lead over the Cardinals (2-6, 0-5 MEC). Just 43 seconds into the second half, junior forward Stephane Shongo took a slotted pass from junior midfielder Koya Nakamura and blasted a shot past the Wheeling goalkeeper.

In the 51st minute, Shongo took the Concord lead to 3-0 as senior defender Zakari Messam tallied his first assist of the season on a soaring pass from the defensive midfield. The Mountain Lions capped the scoring in the 85th minute as freshman forward David Alejandro Garces Estacio found senior defender Alexiou Cartwright off a corner kicker, and Cartwright deposited his first goal, a header, to the top right corner.

No Concord player took more than two shots in the game. Costa, sophomore midfielder Abayomi George and Shongo all had two shots on goal. In total, CU held a 16-5 advantage in total shots.

Junior goalkeeper Iori Tanka needed to make one save to secure his sixth clean sheet of the year.

The Mountain Lions put their six-game unbeaten streak to the test when they welcome Frostburg State to Callaghan Stadium 4:00 p.m. Wednesday.
