ATHENS, W.Va. – For a second straight season, the Concord University women's soccer team will play in the Mountain East Conference Championship Game when Fairmont State comes to Cline Stadium 1:00 p.m. Sunday in Beckley, West Virginia.
LIVE COVERAGE
Stats: The Concord University Sports Information Department will provide live in-game statistics of the conference title game.
Video: Live streaming video will also be available with the MEC's Adam Zundell on play-by-play duty.
RECORDS
The Mountain Lions enter the MEC Championship with a record of 18-1, and on a 13-game winning streak.
Fairmont State has ripped off six straight wins and sports a record of 13-4-2 ahead of Sunday's game.
BACK-TO-BACK
The Mountain Lions make their second consecutive MEC Championship Game appearance after losing in penalty kicks, 4-2, in last year's league title game at West Virginia Wesleyan. Concord advanced to Sunday's game on the strength of its 2-0 MEC Semifinal win over Notre Dame Friday. Sophomore forward
Leah Foster and junior midfielder
Mira Kontio were the scorers for CU as Foster tallied her 16
th goal of the season. Kontio's game-winning goal in the 73
rd was her 11
th of 2019.
RIDING THE MOMENTUM
With a goal against NDC Friday, Foster has now scored in five straight games and six of the last seven contests dating back to October 23 against Davis & Elkins. Earlier this season, Kontio had a streak of scoring in seven straight including the first goal of a 2-1 win at Fairmont State. In four career MEC Tournament contests, Foster has scored three goals including twice against Charleston in 2018.
RISE TO THE TOP
Even though Sunday marks consecutive appearances for CU in the MEC Championship Game, it marks just the sixth time the Mountain Lions are in the conference title game in program history, dating back to the 1999 season. Prior to two wins in last year's postseason, Concord hadn't won a conference tournament contest since 2012. In six years of program existence, Fairmont State has seen its win total go from two victories in 2016 to a school-record this season. FSU will be making its first MEC Tournament Game appearance.
UP FOR THE CHALLENGE
Junior goalkeeper
Katie Maher did not play when the Mountain Lions traveled to Fairmont State October 13, but in last year's MEC Championship Game at West Virginia Wesleyan, Maher made a career-high 14 saves. To put in perspective how good Maher was in last season's title tilt, she has only been asked to make 28 saves in 14 games in 2019.
GOOD ON GOOD
The two top defenses in the MEC will be on display Sunday. Concord and Fairmont State are the only two teams in the league to allow fewer than 10 goals on the season. CU has given up seven while the Fighting Falcons have surrendered eight. Concord is led by MEC Defensive Player of the Year junior defender
Morgan Carmichael who helped CU to 13 shutouts this season. All-MEC Second Team
Alyssa Mahar joins Carmichael in the back. FSU counters with All-MEC First Team goalkeeper Taylor Kennedy who enters the game with the best goals-against average in the MEC (0.41). Maher is second (0.49). Joining Kennedy in the back is All-MEC First Team defender Ella Wilson.
FAIRMONT STATE A GLANCE
FSU has an eight-game unbeaten streak entering Sunday with the last loss coming against Concord. Fairmont State's goal against CU earlier this season was scored by All-MEC First Team midfielder Abby Fowler. In that contest, the Mountain Lions owned an 18-3 advantage in shots. Fairmont State trails in the all-time series 1-6-1 with the lone win coming in 2017 at FSU.
