CU Top-10 in 2013: #1 Baseball Wins Final WVIAC Championship

After 89 years of existence, the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference shut down at the end of the 2012-13 year. The final WVIAC Champions to ever be announced was none other than the Concord University baseball team.

The Mountain Lions claimed its fifth conference title by defeating rival West Virginia State, 11-4, in the finals of the conference championship tournament on May 4, 2013 at Epling Stadium in Beckley, W. Va.

Andrew Seigel drove in three runs from his leadoff spot, Jacob Mays and Joey Miller both knocked in two runs to lead Concord's high-powered offense while relief pitcher Chris Baker silenced the Yellow Jackets' bats over the final 4.1 innings en route to the victory.

The 11 runs marked the 25th time in 2013 that Concord scored at least 10 runs in a game. CU led the nation in both runs scored and batting average.

The victory was Concord's school-record 36th of the season. After winning the WVIAC Tournament, Concord went on to earn a berth into the NCAA Tournament, it's second in the last three seasons. Also champions off the field, the baseball team was recognized at the at the Athens-Concord Town Social for their 1,000 hour community service project.
