CU Top-10 in 2013: #5 Track Shines on Day Two of WVIAC's

Editor's Note: Over the next 10 days, cumountainlions.com will be taking a look back at the top-10 most outstanding moments and achievements by Concord University teams and athletes during 2013.

After day one of the 2013 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships, the Concord University men's and women's teams had plenty of ground to make up after ending the day in sixth and eighth place, respectfully.

Both teams more than made up for their low-scoring first days thanks to day-two performances that saw both programs combine to win five races and record a total of 14 top-five finishes. When the competition was complete both teams battled to the top-half of the overall standings with identical fourth-place finishes.

The men's team day-two comeback was led by conference-championship efforts by Jeff Fertig and Robby Peters.

Fertig, who went on to compete in the NCAA National Championships, won the high jump by clearing a school-record distance of 2.10 meters. The height was the 10th best clearance in NCAA Division II at the time of the event.

Peters, who was less than 24 hours removed from winning a conference title in the 10,000-meter run, made the quick turnaround flawlessly by winning the equally demanding 5,000-meter run after clocking a time of 15:17.37. Peters won the race by more than six seconds.

Other Concord men helping the Mountain Lions to a fourth-place showing included Jacob Doss, Craig Pritt, Cody Honaker and Denver Wright. Individually, Wright and Doss placed second and fourth in the 100-meter dash and 800-meter run, respectively, with the quartet then combining to come in fifth in the 4x400-meter relay.

The women's come-from-behind effort was paced by three victories in addition to six other top-five finishes.

The team of Demi Kirk, Donnie Kirk, Casey Ord and Lydia Powell won both the 4x400-meter relay and 4x100-meter relay by posting times of 3:59.78 and 48.36 seconds.

Demi Kirk ran the 200-meter dash in 25.56 seconds en route to the title. She proceeded to set the school-record time in the 100-meter dash (12.42 seconds), which was good enough for a second-place finish.

Donnie Kirk came away with a second-place finish of her own, ending the 400-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 64.12 seconds. She also finished in fifth place of the 100-meters.

Ord collected two top-five finishes as well with a fourth-place showing in the 100-meters and a fifth-place finish in the 200-meters.

Rounding out the women's efforts was Powell, who placed second in the 400-meter dash.

2013 was just a continuation of the strong performances Concord's track and field teams had at the WVIAC Championships. Since 2007, neither the men's or women's team finished lower than fourth in the final team standings.
