ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer gets Mountain East Conference play started Sunday afternoon when it visits Charleston for a 1:00 p.m. before opposing West Virginia Wesleyan in the home opener at Callaghan Stadium 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.

TOUGH OPENERS
The Mountain Lions dropped a pair of games to nationally-ranked foes Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne to begin the season as they were the only team in the Mountain East Conference to play back-to-back teams in the National Top 25 Poll. Across the two games, junior midfielder
Stephanie Tovar led CU with five shots (three on goal). Sophomore forward
Alana Ferguson and junior defender
Ella Rowell both produced three shots in the contest. Junior goalkeeper
Maddie Loughborough stopped six shots against Catawba and another four versus Lenoir-Rhyne in 45 minutes of work.
EVEN AFTER 90
Last season, Concord and Charleston play to a pair draws, but in different fashions. Concord controlled the run of play at UC by outshooting the Golden Eagles, 18-9, with an 11-4 advantage in shots on goals. However, neither team could break through in a 0-0 tie. Tovar registered four shots while Rowell had a pair of shots on goal. Loughborough saved all four shots that came her way. In late October at Callaghan Stadium, the Mountain Lions needed a late equalizer—in the 69
th minute—to draw UC, 3-3. Tovar scored in the 19
th minute to push Concord ahead 2-1 before senior defender
Katie Garratt hit a 45-yard shot for the game-tying goal. CU owned a 16-10 advantage in shots in the 3-3 draw. Concord is seeking its first win over Charleston since September 2022.
KEEP THE STREAK
Conversely, the Mountain Lions have won eight straight games against West Virginia Wesleyan, and are unbeaten in the last 11 games versus the Bobcats. Ferguson, Tovar and junior forward
Ailsa Swinburne have each scored in their careers versus WVWC with Tovar scoring in both game of a season sweep in 2025. Sophomore defender
Molly Watters was responsible for an assist on CU's first goal in a 4-2 home last season. Last season, the Maroon and Gray outshot the Bobcats 26-9 across two contests. Corner kicks were much more even with CU holding a slight 5-3 edge.
WINNING TRADITION
Over the last six years, Concord has won at least nine conference games in each season. In 2025, CU went 9-3-3 against MEC teams which was the lowest conference win total since an 8-3-2 year in 2018. The Mountain Lions posted a +17 goal differential last year (33-16) while notching seven shutouts in 12 conference games. Tovar scored all five of her goals in 15 MEC starts. Sophomore midfielder
Daisy Cook recorded four goals in 14 conference games. Loughborough's goals-against average of 1.09 in MEC games was slightly better than 1.27 GAA for the season.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Charleston enters the weekend looking for its first win of the season after dropping a pair of games to PSAC foes, Kutztown and Lock Haven. UC was shutout on the road, 1-0, at Lock Haven. Goalkeeper Ines Degli Esposti made six saves versus Lock Haven to keep the game within reach. Veteran midfielder Li-Lou Debaecker has UC's only goal for the season in a 3-1 loss to Kutztown.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
West Virginia Wesleyan is coming off a 4-1 road loss at Pitt-Johnstown—that was after starting the year with a 2-2 draw at Shippensburg. Tessa Grisez is one of two players in the MEC to have already scored two goals on the young season. WVWC was one game away from finishing with a .500 record last season of 7-8-2.
