INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team's second-half comeback at West Virginia State came up short Wednesday night as CU fell 2-1 in a Mountain East Conference game at Dickerson Stadium.

West Virginia State (2-2-2, 2-1-1 MEC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 29^th-minute goal before doubling the lead in the 52^nd minute.

The Mountain Lions (1-5, 1-3 MEC) were able to claw back into the contest in the 70^th minute when junior defender Ella Rowell struck for her first goal of the season, a 30-yard rocket to the top left corner of the net. The assist went to sophomore defender Molly Watters who had laid off a pass to Rowell in the central midfield.

Sophomore forward Alana Ferguson nearly equalized in the 74^th minute as her strike from the corner of the penalty area was punched away.

Watters had a shot from 20 yards blocked in the 88^th minute, and one last attempt from Rowell in the final 25 seconds of the contest sailed wide left of the goal.

Concord was edged in total shots by WVSU, 20-14, but both teams tallied nine shots on goal in the defeat.

Rowell notched five shots while junior forward Ailsa Swinburne racked up four shots with three on frame.

Junior goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough recorded seven saves.

Concord hosts Glenville State 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Callaghan Stadium.
