ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University football team starts Mountain East Conference play 7:00 p.m. Thursday night at Callaghan Stadium as it welcomes the University of Charleston to town.

LIFE IN THE BACKFIELD
The Mountain Lions will have 12 days off between games after defeating Bluefield State, 26-22, September 5 at home, scoring with less than nine minutes left in the one-possession game. The CU defense came to the forefront as it got two turnover on downs in the final quarter to secure the win. Particularly, the Concord pass rush and run defense made a difference in the win. The Maroon and Gray tallied 10 tackles for loss which were the most in a game for CU since September 2022 at West Virginia Wesleyan. Graduate defensive lineman Shambre Jackson had four TFLs in the victory over BSU with half of his TFLs being sacks. Senior linebacker Brodee Rice rolled up 2.5 TFLs, and his second career sack. Jackson is first in the MEC in sacks (3.5) and is tied for second in Division II in sacks.

CENTURY MARK
Junior wide receiver Cordale Russell became the first Concord pass catcher to top 100 receiving yards this season as he brought in three catches for 106 yards in the win over Bluefield State. Russell had catches of 57 and 41 yards versus the Big Blues. With Russell going over 100 yards, the South Dallas, Texas native became the fifth Concord wide receiver to top 100 receiving yards since the start of last season—there has been eight 100-yard receiving games under head coach Cody Edwards in his 13-game tenure at Concord. UC has only allowed one 100-yard receiver in the first three games of the season, but is allowing 240 passing yards per game early in 2026.

SENSATIONAL SPECIALISTS
The Concord special teams played a vital role in the Mountain Lions securing the win over Bluefield State. Freshman kicker Christian Torres connected on field goals of 36 and 28 yards, and is the only kicker in the MEC to make four field goals this season. Sophomore wide receiver Dom Collins made an important impact in the punt return game as he returned three punts for a total of 68 yards. It was the most punt return yards for the Mountain Lions in a game since a home win over West Liberty in 2018. Collins' punt return average of 16.8 yards leads the MEC. In the kick return game, junior wide receiver Que Moore had three returns versus BSU for an average of 19.3 yards.

FIND A WAY
In 2025, one-possession games were the enemy of Concord as the Mountain Lions were only 1-3 in such games. With the win over Bluefield State, CU surpassed last year's win total in one-possession games after a 41-35 win at Davidson to open the year. A big reason for the Maroon and Gray winning the tight contests early in the year is the Concord run defense which ranks third in the MEC and top 60 nationally in yards allowed per game (129.0). However, if you take away the quarterback rushing yards by Davidson and Bluefield State, Concord is allowing just 55.5 rushing yards per game to the oppositions' running backs. By comparison, in last year's four one-score games the Mountain Lions allowed 171 yards on the ground to the opponent.

FINISH THE JOB
Although last year's game at Charleston was a two-possession margin with UC winning 38-24, the final score was not indicative of how close Concord was to winning. The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 17-0 lead, and still led 17-10 at halftime. However, the Maroon and Gray was held to just one second-half score, a 72-yard reception by Collins. Collins needed just four catches to amass 144 yards in the game. Moore also the found the end zone as he hauled in three catches for 48 yards. Among returners, junior defensive back Ar'Terrian Godfrey made seven stops at Charleston. The CU defense was largely quiet against the Golden Eagles in 2025 as it only had two tackles for loss and one takeaway. The Mountain Lions are just 1-9 in their last 10 meetings with their closest geographic rival in the conference.

AIR IT OUT
Last year, the Concord passing game was superb as former standout Tyler Mizzell threw for 350 yards at Charleston. The Golden Eagles finished last in the MEC in passing yards allowed last season, surrendering nearly 265 per game. While Charleston has improved some in its secondary, UC is still eighth in the MEC in pass defense and ranks outside the top 100 in Division II in yards allowed per game through the air. Conversely, Concord will have its hands full with UC quarterback Matt Frye and his two top targets, Devin Hobbs and Caleb Barringer. Frye is averaging 253 yards per game. Hobbs has 16 catches for 267 yards and a pair of touchdowns. While Barringer only has eight catches, he is averaging more than 26 yards per receptoin as part of his 213 receiving yards for the season.

RED ALERT
Success in the red zone by both offenses could prove pivotal in Thursday's contest. Charleston has made 10 trips into the red zone through three games and has come away with points in all 10 possessions with seven ending in touchdowns. For the Mountain Lions, Concord has been in the scoring zone eight times in two games, and while seven possessions have ended with points only three have been good for touchdowns. On the defensive side, Concord has given up points in seven of eight red zone possessions by Bluefield State and Davidson with six being touchdowns. And for Charleston, the Golden Eagles have seen the opponent march inside the 20-yard line 16 times with 13 possessions ending in points. And 12 have ended in touchdowns for Grand Valley State, California (Pa.) and North Greenville.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
2- Redshirt freshman defensive back Elijah Owens is one of 11 players in Division II to have recovered two fumbles already this season.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
While the passing game has carried the Charleston offense thus far, the rushing game is still looking to get on track. Jamal Wallace leads the ground attack with 142 yards on 25 carries. Brian Jones is UC's top tackler as his 22 stops this season are tied for fifth in the MEC. Veteran punter Steven Earnest leads the conference in punting average, nearly 45 yards on his 14 punts (44.8 yards). And in the kicking game, Zachary Alvarez has been successful on all three of his field goals with a long of 28.
