ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team was unable to keep pace with Wheeling Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium, falling 47-25.
Concord (6-3, 4-3 MEC) led 10-3 after 15 minutes, but WU (5-4, 4-2 MEC) outscored the Mountain Lions 34-7 in the middle quarters.
CU marched right down the field to start the game as sophomore running back
Jayden Williams capped a six-play, 80-yard drive with a 21-yard rushing touchdown. The Cardinals got to the edge of the red zone on their first possession, but the Mountain Lions held Wheeling to a field goal to maintain a 7-3 lead.
Then on Concord's second drive, freshman kicker
Christian Torres came through with a record-breaking field goal. The Brock, Texas native hit from 55 yards which is both an MEC record and a Concord record. Torres broke Andy Ellington's 12-year program record of 52 yards while eclipsing Charleston's Zach Alvarez MEC record of 54 yards which was set earlier this season at Concord.
Up 10-3, the Mountain Lions watched Wheeling go up 17-10 going into halftime.
The lead swelled to 30-10 before sophomore wide receiver
Dom Collins caught a 95-yard pass from graduate quarterback
Devin Kargman with 8:07 remaining in the third to trim the lead to 30-17. The 95-yard passing play tied a program record for longest play from scrimmage.
However, the 13-point margin was as close as CU would get for the remainder of the game.
Collins finished the day with his first career 200-yard passing game as he snagged five receptions for 201 yards and two touchdowns—Collins also had a 40-yard, fourth-quarter score.
Kargman passed for 339 yards and two touchdowns.
Freshman linebacker
Raymone Whitner led the defense with a career-best nine tackles. Senior defensive lineman
Nick Mercer had six stops with two going for loss, including a sack.
Concord plays its final MEC game of the season on road, next Saturday, November 7 at Fairmont State. Â
