ATHENS, W.Va. – Under first year-year head coach Noah Rhodes, the Concord University women's soccer team travels to face a pair of nationally-ranked teams as they begin the season 7:00 p.m. Thursday against 13
th-ranked Catawba before facing eighth-rated Lenoir-Rhyne 1:00 p.m. Sunday.

TOUGH OPENERS
For the fourth straight season, Concord opens up the season with a nationally-ranked team on the schedule in one of its first two games. The last three years CU has faced either Gannon or Kutztown in its season opener. In 2024, the Mountain Lions played Kutztown and Gannon in back-to-back games to start the campaign when both were ranked in the top 25. In 2025, the Maroon and Gray welcomed Gannon who was top 10 nationally in the second game of the season. Though CU has familiarity against top 25 teams early in the schedule, Thursday will be the first time playing a South Atlantic Conference school since 2018 when it tied Wingate, 1-1.
BACK LINE IS BACK
A strength of the Mountain Lions in recent memory has been its backline defense. The top returner for CU this season is junior defender
Ella Rowell who earned All-Atlantic Region Second Team and All-Mountain East Conference First Team in 2025. She had one goal and six assists while helping Concord to nine shutouts. Joining Rowell in the final line of defense is senior
Katie Garratt who has battled injuries throughout her career, but has 43 career appearances as a Mountain Lion, scoring five goals along the way. Sophomore defender
Molly Watters split time between the midfield and left back in 2025 as she netted two goals and tallied two assists.
OTHER OLD FACES
Other experience coming back for the Mountain Lions includes junior midfielder
Stephanie Tovar who is the top returning scorer for CU with five goals last season, sophomore midfielder
Daisy Cook who recorded four goals in 2025 and junior midfielder
Ailsa Swinburne who has seven career goals in the Maroon and Gray. Of the expected regular field players and junior goalkeeper
Maddie Loughborough, Concord returns more than 240 career appearances to its lineup for Rhodes in his first season in Athens.
ONLY TUNE-UPS
The games Thursday and Sunday serves as Concord's only two non-conference games of the season before the Mountain Lions get a week off prior to the start of MEC play Sunday, September 6. And the opponents do not get any easier as CU begins conference action with a visit to 2025 MEC Tournament runner-up Charleston. The three straight road games are finally met with a welcomed home game September 9 versus West Virginia Wesleyan. The WVWC contest starts a stretch of four home games over a 12-day span.
SCOUTING THE INDIANS
Catawba won both the SAC regular season and tournament championships last season, but was upset in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Indians return the Division II National Player of the Year in Bree Ehmer who scored 20 goals last fall. Ella Matthews threw in six goals last season while Ali Skinner added five. Catawba also welcomes back its starting goalkeeper from a year ago in Jenni Dahne who started 21 games and posted a 0.56 goals-against average in recording 12 shutouts.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
LR was the regular-season runner-up in the SAC last fall as it was bounced in the first round of the conference tournament, but rebounded to win the Southeast Regional and advanced to National Quarterfinals. All three top scorers are back for Lenoir-Rhyne. Katie Durham scored 10 goals and passed out seven assists. Lucia Hidalgo was one off Durham's pace with nine goals while Ava Hickman notched six goals.
