ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University football team begins the season on the road against Division I foe Davidson 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Davidson College Stadium in non-conference action.

OUTSIDE THREATS
Two of the most notable returners for the Mountain Lions this season are sophomore wide receiver Dom Collins and junior wide receiver Que Moore. The duo proved to be two of the most lethal pass catchers in the Mountain East Conference through the first half of the 2025 season before Collins' season ended on the first drive of the fifth game. Still, Collins hauled in 24 catches for 579 yards and seven touchdowns. His yardage total and touchdowns were top five in Division II at the time of his injury. Moore snagged 37 receptions for 649 yards and eight scores. He had two multi-touchdown games, including his first career 100-yard game (106) at Ferrum to go with two touchdowns to end the season. Moore earned All-MEC Second Team in 2025. Among returning receivers in the MEC, Moore is second in the conference in receiving yards from last season while Collins is sixth.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL
Concord's defensive backfield was not only one of the best in the MEC last fall, but one of the top units in all of Division. Concord's 14 interceptions—all of them by a listed defensive back—was second in the conference and top 25 nationally. Junior defensive back Ar'Terrian Godfrey finished the season with three picks—two in the season opener at UVa.-Wise with his third coming in the final game of the season at Ferrum. Sophomore defensive Berlin Campfort ended 2025 with interceptions in back-to-back games against Fairmont State and Ferrum. Overall, the CU pass defense held opponents to 197 yards passing per game last year which was second in the MEC. And though he didn't have an interception, junior defensive back Stanley Horn Jr. earned respect on the outside as he finished second on the team with seven pass break-ups.

MEET THE NEW BACKFIELD
Thought CU returns Collins, Moore, senior tight end Headley Isnadin and three offensive linemen—seniors Bishop Madukafi, Aidan Parsons and Antonio Smith—as offensive starters from last year—the Mountain Lions must replace All-MEC quarterback Tyler Mizzell, who transferred to Ball State, along with its top two running backs Rashad Luckey-Dowdy and Israel Rhodes. Graduate quarterback Devin Kargman is the projected starter for Concord ahead of the Davidson matchup. Kargman spent four seasons at Kent State where he played in 10 games over the last three seasons, appearing in road games against Penn State, Pitt, Tennessee and Oklahoma most notably. In 2024, Kargman threw for 181 yards and two scores at Pitt. The projected lead running back for CU is Greg Burrell who ran for 671 yards and three touchdowns at Texas State in 2025.

DEFENSIVE QUARTERBACKS
Among active Mountain Lions, no one has appeared in more games than senior linebacker Brodee Rice who has seen the field in 31 games over three seasons. The local native of Princeton is listed as Concord's starting middle linebacker. While Rice started four games last season—three at middle linebacker—he hasn't been a full-time starter on defense since his freshman year when he started all 11 games between middle linebacker and weakside linebacker. Helping Rice make the defensive calls is freshman Raymone Whitner who is projected at weakside linebacker and Campfort and Godfrey at the two safety spots. The only two returners to the Concord defense that started more than three games at the same position last year is Godfrey (10 games at safety) and Horn (seven starts at cornerback.

LONG TIME COMING
The Mountain Lions face their first Division I team since a 2012 encounter at Liberty, a game that Concord led 7-0 midway through the second quarter before falling 21-13. Since 2000, CU has only faced three other Division I schools, all members of the Football Championship Division (FCS). The Maroon and Gray played at Elon in 2011, at Delaware State in 2006 and made the less than two-hour trip to Johnson City, Tennessee to square off with East Tennessee State in 2003. The Mountain Lions were shut out against the three other mentioned teams. CU is 0-10 all-time against Division I teams with the closest loss being 15-14 at VMI in 1999.

BACK IN THE TAR HEEL STATE
Concord plays its first game in the state of North Carolina since a 68-21 loss to UNC-Pembroke in 2023. It was the second of back-to-back games on the road versus UNCP as CU outlasted the Braves 58-56 in five overtimes in 2022. The Mountain Lions also made visits to UNC-Pembroke in 2018 and 2016, but the last games in the Old North State for CU against a team other than UNCP was a 2013 win at Lenoir-Rhyne, 18-10, to begin the year. Thursday night will be a homecoming of sorts for 18 CU players that are expected to be on the trip, including Charlotte area natives sophomore punter Zach Moyer (Charlotte), sophomore running back Jayden Williams (Charlotte), junior defensive back Jaylen Roseboro (Denver) and junior offensive lineman Keaton Hunt (Troutman) to name a few.

OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT
The Mountain Lions are seeking to win back-to-back season-opening games for the first time since the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Concord defeated UVa.-Wise 37-29 on the road to open the head coaching tenure for Cody Edwards last fall. Collins had seven receptions for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Moore hauled in a touchdown and rolled up 67 receiving yards. Defensively, junior linebacker Jonathan Williams had seven tackles while Godfrey affected the game in a variety of ways with five tackles, two interceptions and 1.5 tackles for loss. Davidson has not won a season opener since it opened up the 2019 campaign with a 27-20 win against Georgetown.

RUN THE ROCK
While Concord's rushing game had its peaks and valleys last fall, CU finished on a high note by rushing for 160 or more yards in four of the final five games, including racking up 212 yards at Ferrum in the season finale. Eight of CU's 13 rushing touchdowns for the season came in the final five games. Though Concord had to completely restock its backfield, Burrell is complemented by junior running back Maurice Jones who ran for 180 yards last year—Concord's leading returning ground gainer. Also in the mix in the backfield is Jayden Williams who ran for 438 yards at West Virginia Wesleyan last year.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Davidson is coming off a 2-10 season under then first-year head coach Saj Thakkar. DC returns three of its top five tacklers, including leading tackler Hayden Altenburg who had 75 stops to go with two interceptions. Altenburg also forced three fumbles. Casey Bullock is scheduled to start Thursday's opener at quarterback. He appeared in six games last year throwing for 223 yards over 38 attempts.
