INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team went 1-1 against West Virginia State in Mountain East Conference South Division play at Lady Jacket Field Friday afternoon, winning 7-4 and losing 6-5.
Game 1: Concord 7 – West Virginia State 4
Senior pitcher/infielder
Madison Hollis was the star of the game as she drove in five runs on the day and pitched her way to her 10
th win of the season in the circle.
The Mountain Lions (17-13, 7-5 MEC) took the lead away from West Virginia State (12-16, 4-8 MEC) in the second inning as senior catcher
Kayla Sholter scored freshman catcher/infielder
Hannah Niten on an RBI base hit. The second run in the inning came on a groundout that brought in sophomore utility
Kristy McCord.
For the first time in the game, Hollis helped her own cause with an RBI double in the third to double the CU lead to 3-1.
However, West Virginia State answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The tie, though, was short lived as Hollis was in the middle of the offense again as she punched a single to the opposite field in right to plate junior infielder
Kendall Morgan.
Holding a 4-3 lead into the top of the seventh, Hollis helped Concord put the game out of reach as she crushed her fourth home of the season, a three-run blast, to left center field.
Morgan and Hollis each had three hits in the game. Hollis was a triple shy of the cycle to go with her five RBI. Morgan scored three times. Sholter was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Hollis (10-5) needed just 67 pitches to toss a complete game as allowed four runs and struck out two.
Game 2: West Virginia State 6 – Concord 5
A late Concord rally came up just short as the teams settled for a split.
WVSU scored three times in bottom of the third, but the Mountain Lions had a quick answer with three scores in the top of the fourth.
Senior infielder
Lacie Lewis stroked her second double of the game, and scored during the next at-bat when Hollis lifted her second home run of the day out to center field to draw CU within 3-2. Later in the inning, Niten scored on a sacrifice fly.
However, West Virginia State came back with two runs in the fourth and went up 6-3 in the fifth.
Concord had one last push in the seventh. The first two batters reached before senior outfielder
Morgan Gleason scored freshman outfielder
Grace Dodson on a single. A sacrifice fly from sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Reghan Hintz cut the deficit to 6-5, but that was as close as CU would get.
Lewis had the only multi-hit game for the Maroon and Gray with both of her hits going for doubles. Hollis drove in two runs on the home run.
Hintz (6-8) tossed six innings as she struck out three batters.
CU travels to Charleston 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
