CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team dropped a pair of 2-0 games to Charleston Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference South Division play at the UC Softball Field.
Game 1: Charleston 2 – Concord 0
The Golden Eagles (28-10, 12-2 MEC) were able to plate a run each in the fifth and sixth innings as Concord (17-15, 7-7 MEC) was clipped in the opener.
Senior pitcher/infielder
Madison Hollis matched zeros with UC's Addison Mass through the first four innings. Hollis did not allow her first hit of the game until a two-out single in the third inning, but was able to strand the runner at second base.
The Mountain Lions' best chance to break the deadlock came in the top of the third inning as consecutive one-out hits by junior pitcher
Josi Ervin and junior infielder
Kendall Morgan gave CU its first runner in scoring position. A two-out walk loaded the bases, but Concord was unable to cash in.
UC scored with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, and hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Down a pair of runs in its final at-bat, CU wasn't done threatening as Morgan reached first on a two-out error. Sophomore utility
Kristy McCord followed with a base hit to place runners on the corners. But again, Concord was unable to capitalize.
Hollis (10-6) was the pitcher of record. She allowed two runs on five hits while striking out two.
McCord recorded two hits to lead the Concord offense as it outhit UC, 7-5.
Game 2: Charleston 2 – Concord 0
The Mountain Lions saw Charleston manufacture two runs in the sixth inning as sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Reghan Hintz was sharp in the circle.
Hintz got help from her defense in the bottom of the first inning as senior infielder
Lacie Lewis and McCord turned a double play in the middle infield. And in the second, Hintz struck out the side to keep the game scoreless.
She also faced the minimum in the fourth with two more punchouts.
Prior to Charleston scoring in the bottom of the sixth, the Mountain Lions pushed two runners on base with one out, but was left empty handed.
A two-out single in the seventh by senior catcher
Kayla Sholter brought the tying run to the plate.
Hintz (6-9) struck out eight over six innings as she allowed two unearned on four hits.
Senior outfielder
Alina Giles, Morgan and Sholter accounted for the CU hits.
The Mountain Lions play their first MEC North Division games of the season next weekend, beginning with Wheeling on the road Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
