ON THE HILL
The Concord pitching staff had a really solid weekend in conference play this past weekend. Over four games, the Mountain Lions surrendered just 12 runs (10 earned) in two games against West Liberty and Wheeling. This is the fewest runs allowed in a four-game conference weekend since last year when Concord allowed just 10 runs in a 2-2 series against West Virginia Wesleyan. Redshirt sophomore Kaden Varela-Payne continued his great 2026 campaign with a six inning start against the Hilltoppers. Varela-Payne added seven strikeouts to propel his MEC-leading number to 49 on the season. The Davis & Elkins offense that Concord will face only bats .238 on the season and has scored the second-fewest runs in the conference with 108.
BIG-TIME BACKSTOP
Senior catcher Austin Hear has been in excellent form for Concord. At the plate, Hear is five for his last 12 including his first home run of the year at Emory & Henry. In game one against Wheeling, Hear notched his first career triple in the narrow defeat. Where Hear has separated himself as one of the best catchers in the region is behind the dish. Hear has thrown out 14 runners this year which not only leads the conference, but also the Atlantic region. This is currently the second-most in a single season, as he's tied with Jordan Clark from the 2019 season. Nationally, Hear is tied for fourth for most runners thrown out.
ROAD WARRIOR
Another arm that has been very good for CU is that of senior pitcher Logan Darrow. Darrow has been deployed on the road since the start of MEC play. Against conference opposition, the right-hander has tossed five innings, allowing just three runs and collecting three strikeouts. In his career, Darrow has thrown just two innings against the Senators. He gave up just two hits and no runs.Â
TAKE ADVANTAGE
Concord has a familiar foe up next as it looks to bounce back. The Maroon and Gray have dominated Davis & Elkins, leading the all-time series 49-14 and they post an 18-2 record since the start of the 2021 season. After dropping the opening game to D&E last season, Concord stormed back to win the last three with a 24-5 run differential. In the series, Hear homered twice and senior outfielder Korbin Bostic mashed a long ball as well. Junior pitcher Jake Robinson has tossed 12 innings in his career against D&E, allowing one earned run and striking out 16 batters. Additionally, senior infielder Matthew DiSanti was 6-for-13 in last year's series against the Senators.Â
SCOUTING THE SENATORS
Davis & Elkins has been struggling as of late, entering the weekend with a 4-23 record and on an eight-game losing streak. However, the MEC South is a very tight race as the Senators and the Mountain Lions each sit at 2-8, which is tied for third. D&E is led by Grant Mealey in terms of run production. Mealey has four homers and 13 RBI on the season. Kenny Capria is another big bat for Senator Nation as he tops the team with a .329 batting average and has an on-base percentage of .471.
