OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball team starts a three-game Mountain East Conference homestand with Point Park Saturday at 2:00 p.m. on Senior Day followed by Fairmont State Monday at 4:00 p.m. in a pair of games at the Carter Center.
LAST TIME OUT
The Mountain Lions got back in the win column with a 68-51 victory at Salem in their final non-conference game of the season. Concord obtained the lead with the first basket of the game and didn't look back. Senior forward
Abbie Smith led Concord as the only scorer in double figures with 17 points and seven rebounds. This was a game that saw Concord employ a lot of their personnel as 13 players saw the court and 10 Mountain Lions scored in the win. Just behind Smith in the scoring column was freshman guard
Lacee Smith who finished with nine points, all by way of the three. Sophomore guard
Kenyah Stubbs finished with eight points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior guard
Jewell Dixon, senior guard
Kennedy Scales, senior forward
Olivia Ziolkowski, junior guard
Alexis Frazee, and junior guard
Kiley Smich each finished with six points in the contest. Dixon and Frazee combined for four of Concord's eight three-pointers with L. Smith accounting for three more.
CELEBRATING THE SENIORS
It'll be a special day in the Carter Center Saturday as Concord honors its four seniors in the matchup against Point Park. Dixon, a transfer from Virginia Union, has appeared in seven games and scored a career best six points in Wednesday's victory over Salem. Scales, a four-year senior from Salem, Virginia is putting together a very solid senior campaign. Scales is averaging a career-best 8.1 points per game, and has shown up in big moments, including a January 21 buzzer-beater to take down Charleston on the road. A. Smith is one of the greatest Mountain Lions to ever don the Maroon and Gray. The Little Hocking, Ohio native is one of four players in program history to surpass 1,000 career points (1,723) and 1,000 rebounds (1,024). Her career field-goal percentage of 54.0 percent ranks second in program history. The last senior being recognized is senior forward
McKayah Stubbs who transferred in with her sister, Kenyah, from Glenville State prior to this season and has appeared in one game this season.
TURN UP THE HEAT
Concord's defense kicked back into high gear against the Tigers of Salem, allowing just 51 points in win, the lowest total of the season. Concord forced tough look after tough look and Salem shot just 27.7 percent from the field and 10.5 percent from beyond the arc—the 27.7 percent from the field was the lowest total of the season defensively. An even better sign for the Mountain Lions, they forced 17 turnovers and came away with 11 steals. Ziolkowski had the most on the team with three, with A. Smith, Smich and Stubbs followed suit with two each. This is the sixth time that they have had double-digit steals in a game and they are 5-1 in those games.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
The Mountain Lions return home for a massive three-game homestand. Thus far, Concord posts a record of 7-3 in front of their home crowd. Seven home wins is tied for third-most in the MEC and is just one shy of their eight home wins a season ago. Nine home wins is the most in a season under Coach Southcott. Concord has not defeated Point Park at home since they joined the MEC, dropping their only matchup inside the Carter Center last season. However, they have faired well against Fairmont State at home, winning two straight against the Fighting Falcons in Athens.
STAND TALL
The Pioneers present a very talented frontcourt to try and stifle Concord's duo of A. Smith and Ziolkowski. The Pioneers lead the conference in blocked shots per game, averaging 4.3 rejections per contest. They are anchored by the conference's leading shot blocker in freshman guard Kamryn Pieper (1.4 blocks per game). Junior forward Elizabeth Boyd is also top five in the MEC in blocks per game (1.1 blocks per game). While PPU doesn't defend the three-point line with great effectiveness, they do try and muck up the paint as opponents shoot just 39.5 percent from the field against them.
SWAT THE PESTS
Fairmont State ranks 12th in all of Division II in steals per game averaging 13.7. Three Fighting Falcons sit inside the top five for steals per game as Fairmont can turn defense into offense with the best of them. That is the big point of emphasis for Concord, in their first matchup Fairmont forced 31 turnovers. Despite this, CU fell by just six points at Joe Retton Arena in December.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
51 - Concord's 51 points allowed versus Salem is the lowest total of the season.
56.1 -
Abbie Smith's field goal percentage of 56.1 is the best in the MEC.
60 - Coach Southcott is eyeing her 60th win at the helm of Concord Women's Basketball. She has a career mark of 59-51.
SCOUTING POINT PARK
Point Park sits towards the bottom of the MEC with a 6-13, 3-11 MEC, but senior forward Camille Fultz is one of the premier scorers in the league, averaging 15 points per game. The afforementioned Boyd and Pieper will certainly provide a challenge on the low block with their rebounding and shot making ability.
SCOUTING FAIRMONT STATE
Fairmont State enters in second place in the MEC with a 16-4, 10-3 MEC record. They are led by junior guard Gabby Reep who has been outstanding for Fairmont. Reep has done everything for the Fighting Falcons, leading them in points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game, steals per game, and in field goal percentage.
