PLAY IN THE PAINT
In Saturday's win over Davis & Elkins, the Mountain Lions were able to overcome making just four three-pointers in the game, tying a season low, by netting 46 of their 75 points in the paint. Not only did CU make a season-low four triples in the game, the 12 attempts from beyond the arc were a season low for the Maroon and Gray. Concord was bullish about getting towards the rim as 50 shot of its attempts came on two-point tries which tied a season high, set previously against Charleston on December 6. Concord shot 53 percent in the paint against Davis & Elkins (23-for-43), and the 46 points in the paint by the Mountain Lions were the most in a game since December 10 when they 52 points in the painted area versus Frostburg State. Individually, all 14 points for junior forward Boubacar Djigo came in the paint at D&E while freshman guard Micah Young scored 10 of his 16 points in the lane.

LOCK DOWN D
CU and Davis & Elkins both shot 46 percent from the floor in the game, but the major difference in the contest was Concord holding the Senators to 42.8 percent shooting and 33 points in the second half. The Mountain Lions heated up to 50 percent in the second half on the offensive end. On Saturday, the Maroon and Gray improved to 8-2 this season when holding the opponent under 80 points—the only two losses for Concord this season when giving up less than 80 points is to Virginia Union (Nov. 24) and Pitt-Johnstown (Nov. 15). Saturday also marked the third straight game and the fifth time in the last six contests that CU allowed six or fewer three-pointers. In those six games, the only team to shoot higher than 37 percent from three-point range against Concord was Salem.

CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN
Head coach Todd May picked up his 150th career win at Concord on Saturday afternoon, becoming the third active coach in the MEC with 150 wins at their current school. He joins Fairmont State's Tim Koenig (153 wins) and West Virginia State's Bryan Poore (437 wins) as coaches in the conference with 150 or more wins. On the all-time CU list for career wins, May is 21 wins away form tying Don Christie (1977-1989) as the second winningest coach in program history. With two more wins this season, May would clinch his sixth winning season over his 10-year tenure on the sidelines at the Carter Center. May is 11-3 over his last 14 games against Wheeling, dating back to a January 2019 win on the road.

SCORING GALORE
The Mountain Lions outlasted Wheeling in a high-scoring 108-100 thriller on the road January 14. Young torched the Cardinals for a career-best 39 points, also the highest scoring game for any CU player this winter. He finished the night 14-for-23 from the floor, 4-of-7 from three-point distance and 7-for-9 at the foul line. Sophomore guard Josiah Rickards threw in one of his two 20-point performances on the season as he scored 19 of his 20 points after halftime. Djigo netted 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for one of his 15 double-doubles on the season. The 108 points were the most for the Mountain Lions in a regulation game since January 2016 when they netted 111 points versus West Virginia State. On the other side, Wheeling received 35 points from Ayden Goll for the Cardinals' highest-scoring single game of the year.

FREE THROW FRENZY
The first matchup between Concord and Wheeling featured 43 fouls which led to 66 free throws in the contest. The Mountain Lions shot 28-for-39 at the charity stripe, a 71.8 percent rate. Rickards stood at the line and made 12-of-14 attempts with the 12 makes being a single-game high for any Concord player this winter. Djigo chipped in a 4-for-5 showing at the free-throw line in the contest. The 39 foul shots are just one of two times this season that Concord has shot 30 or more free throws in a game—the Maroon and Gray attempted 30 free throws at Fairmont State in December. CU continues to lead the conference in free-throw percentage at 77.9 percent which is also 13th in Division II. Wheeling is seventh in the conference in foul shooting (72.6 percent), but Goll leads the MEC at 87.4 percent from the foul line.

DEFEND THE ARC
The last time Concord and Wheeling played, the teams combined for 22 made three-pointers as CU canned 12 and Wheeling hit 10 triples. Young (four), junior guard Khamani Wertz (three) and senior guard Savier McCall (two) combined for nine three-pointers. Goll threw in five three-pointers in the contest to lead Wheeling. The Cardinals make 10.1 three-pointers per game while CU hits on 8.3 three-pointers per contest, seventh and eight in the MEC, respectively. The sides are also seventh and eighth in the league in three-point percentage: Concord (33.8) and Wheeling (33.4). The Cardinals rely on Caleb Murray for a bulk of their makes from beyond the arc as he is fourth in the MEC with 67. The Mountain Lions have seven different players with at least 15 made three-pointers, and CU is 6-1 this year when hitting at least 10 triples.
