LATE DRAMA
In Concord's four-game weekend at the Big Region Tournament in Johnson City, Tennessee, CU's final game came down to an extra-innings walk-off against Lincoln Memorial. After senior pitcher/infielder
Madison Hollis shutout the Railsplitters for eight innings, sophomore utility
Kristy McCord came through with a bases-loaded walk-off single to lift the Mountain Lions to a 1-0 win. Last season, Concord recorded two walk-off hits with both being home runs by senior infielder
Lacie Lewis against California (Pa.) and West Liberty. The single by McCord scored Lewis as she had two RBI and three runs scored during the opening weekend of games.
EXTRA-BASE EXTRAVAGANZA
Nearly one-third of CU's hits over the weekend went for extra bases (7 of 25). Senior infielder
Alina Giles and Lewis were at the forefront of the extra-base hits as both players had a pair of doubles. Giles picked up where she left off last season as she led the Mountain Lions in doubles last spring with 12. Five of Giles' doubles came in the final 14 games of the season. For Lewis, she ripped her 33
rd and 34
th career doubles last weekend and is now three two-base hits away from moving into seventh place on the career list at Concord. Stephanie Harper (2010-13) occupies seventh at CU with 37 career doubles.
START HOT
Sophomore utility
Blake Jamerson and senior catcher
Kayla Sholter both had four hits in the four games in Tennessee. Jamerson's stellar start to the season comes a year after she only recorded 14 hits in 79 at-bats, and only recorded three at-bats in the final 10 games she played. Jamerson added three RBI over the weekend. Sholter leads CU with a .400 average (4-for-10) through four games. A year ago, Sholter notched 19 hits in 75 at-bats, a .253 average. She had one of Concord's seven doubles, and against Emory & Henry notched a two-hit game, her fifth in the last 13 games played dating back to last season.
BEATING BELMONT ABBEY
Saturday's twinbill will be the second consecutive year that Concord faces the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey. The teams split a doubleheader last season with CU taking the first game, 4-3, before Belmont Abbey won the second game, 5-1. Jamerson was 3-for-6 in the doubleheader. Sophomore pitcher/infielder
Reghan Hintz went 1-for-2 in game one while also driving in a run. Lewis drove in Concord's lone run in the second game. Junior pitcher
Josi Ervin allowed one earned run and struck out three over 6.2 innings in the nightcap. The teams also previously met in 2020 at Lander University with the Mountain Lions securing a 5-3 win.
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
BAC has swept a doubleheader from Fayetteville State before being swept in two games by Lenoir-Rhyne. The Crusaders have slugged four home runs thus far this season. As a team, Belmont Abbey is hitting .322. Ella Crowe is batting .556 with a home run, three RBI and a double. Two of the five hits for Megan Towery have been doubles. Freshman pitcher Sienna Garcia allowed one run in five innings to Fayetteville State, but was hit with six earned runs in four innings versus Lenoir-Rhyne.
