RANKED ON RANKED
A unique scenario awaits Concord men's soccer on Sunday as the team will engage in its first ever ranked-versus-ranked matchup. The 18th-ranked Mountain Lions play host to the third-ranked Charleston Golden Eagles in a historic matchup. While this is the first time that both teams have been ranked, one of the two sides have been inside the Top 25 in each of their last five meetings.

SOUND THE DRUMS OF WAR
The Mountain Lions suit up for another battle with Charleston Sunday afternoon at Callaghan Stadium. While UC has been a perennial soccer powerhouse, Concord have grown into the main challenger under head coach Alex Smith. The all-time series record has only two positive results for CU, a 3-2 win in 2024 and a 0-0 draw in 2025. The first meeting in 2026 featured a 3-1 loss in the capitol city, but the Maroon and Gray will look to capture some magic for a second ever win over the Golden Eagles.

THROW AWAY THE KEY
The Mountain Lions continue to dominate opposing teams with rock solid backline play and a formidable keeper in junior Iori Tanaka. CU is tied for second in all of NCAA Division II in shutouts with 10, which is already a program record. That backline regularly consists of senior captain Zakari Messam, junior Neko Worthy, junior Ben Musengo and freshman Khotatso Balepile. While also being tied for the second fewest goals conceded on the season at just seven, Concord defenseman have combined for 10 points offensively.

SETTING THE TABLE
With the regular season coming to a close, let's dive into some scenarios as postseason play is just around the corner. Both Charleston and Concord are tied atop the MEC South with 30 points on the year. Concord has a chance to win the MEC South for the first time in program history, and it would require a win over UC and matching Charleston's result in the final game of the season. For Concord, that is a road contest against Shawnee State and for Charleston, that is a road matchup at Frostburg State. While a draw would be a good result against such a talented UC team, the Golden Eagles would hold the tiebreaker with a higher head-to-head goal differential. As of right now, both teams are projected as NCAA Tournament teams with Charleston topping the Super Region 1 rankings and Concord in fourth.

SCOUTING THE CHARLESTON GOLDEN EAGLES
Charleston is having another great season, sitting at 13-2. Reigning MEC Freshman of the Year, Martin Echarren leads Charleston offensively with a conference best 21 points. While defense was the name of UC's game a season ago, this offense has been dominating MEC foes in 2026. UC has scored 48 goals which is second in the nation and 21 more than second place in the MEC.

SCOUTING THE SHAWNEE STATE BEARS
Shawnee State have had some positive results in its first year in the Mountain East. SSU battled Concord in the first meeting between the two sides, a 2-1 Mountain Lion win at Callaghan Stadium. Offensively, it's the duo of Yuri Neeve and Théo Trindade powering the Bears for seven combined goals.
