Concord Downs Davis & Elkins in Four Sets

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team defeated Davis & Elkins in four sets Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center in a Mountain East Conference contest.

After CU (15-7, 7-1 MEC) dropped the first set by a score of 27-25, Concord rebounded to win the next three over the Senators (0-22, 0-8 MEC), 25-18, 25-17, 25-14.

The Mountain Lions trailed throughout the duration of the first set, but ripped off three points to tie the opener at 24-24. The late rally was not enough as Concord staved a handful of set points before being clipped.

CU shook off the first set as it stormed out to an 8-1 lead in the second set. Senior middle hitter Jasmine Anderson spurred the early offense with three of her nine kills. The Mountain Lions kept the Senators (0-22, 0-8 MEC) at arm's length until D&E pulled within 19-16. Concord responded by ripping off four straight points as junior right side Maddie Stull and senior outside Chloe Thompson started the run with a kill each. A kill from sophomore middle hitter Addie Adkins tied the match at 1-1.

Similar to the second set, the first five points of the crucial third set went to the Mountain Lions. D&E came back to get within 12-11. But, Stull jumpstarted an extended 10-3 run with consecutive kills before two of the last three points of the set was scored by senior outside hitter Meg Williams on kills.

With Concord trying to put the match away in four sets, the Mountain Lions trailed 10-8, but finished on a 17-4 run. Concord scored eight straight points that included a pair of aces by Adkins and two kills from freshman middle hitter Mariah Moss to go up 18-11 before winning by 11 points.

Concord hit .276 for the match, and was at least .205 in three of the four sets. Defensively, the Mountain Lions recorded 14 blocks. Anderson went for eight blocks while Moss and Stull each had five blocks. Three Mountain Lions finished in double figures in digs: senior libero Allie Davis (20), junior defensive specialist Camille Testerman (10) and Thompson (10).

Thompson went for a double-double as she had a team-best 13 kills. Stull threw in 10 kills. Senior setter Paige Richmond had 28 assists.

CU is off until Friday when it hits the road for a match at Wheeling, starting at 7:00 p.m.
