Concord Falls in Road Contest Against Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team was defeated in three sets Friday night in a Mountain East Conference matchup against Wheeling inside the McDonough Center.

The set scores were 24-26, 26-28, 20-25.

The first set went back-and-fourth as Concord (15-8, 7-2 MEC) trailed 16-13, but went on a 7-2 run that was capped by a block from sophomore middle hitter Addie Adkins and senior outside hitter Meg Williams. Later in the set, CU broke a 23-23 tie when Adkins and freshman middle hitter Mariah Moss teamed up on a block. However, Wheeling scored the final three points to win the opener.

The second game was just as tight as it featured 12 ties and four lead changes. Concord went up 13-9 in the set, and held off the Cardinals (13-8, 7-2 MEC) until they took a 22-21 lead. Three times, the Maroon and Gray had set point, at 24-23 on a kill from Williams, at 25-24 after a kill from Adkins and 26-25 after a kill from Moss, but again it was Wheeling that scored the final three points.

CU was forced to chase the third set as it fell behind 16-9. Concord got as close as 17-14 after back-to-back kills from junior right side Maddie Stull and Williams, but Wheeling answered with five straight points.

Williams finished a dig shy of a double-double with 13 kills and nine digs. Senior outside hitter Chloe Thompson notched 10 kills. Adkins tossed in seven kills and four blocks.

Senior setters Paige Richmond (17) and Haley Sweeney (14) combined for 31 assists. Senior libero Allie Davis recorded 17 digs.

The Mountain Lions wrap up their two-match northern panhandle swing 11:00 a.m. Saturday against West Liberty.
