OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball team dukes it out against Glenville State in battle between first-place teams at 5:00 p.m. in the Carter Center.

LAST TIME OUT
The Mountain Lions secured their fourth straight victory in dramatic fashion in the Capital city. Concord defeated Charleston 73-71 on a buzzer-beater from senior guard Kennedy Scales. Senior forward Abbie Smith led Concord with 20 points and eight rebounds in the win. Sophomore guard Kenyah Stubbs continued her great form with 17 points. The other Mountain Lion in double figures was senior forward Olivia Ziolkowski who posted 14 points. Concord's defense once again rose to the occassion, holding Charleston to just 34.7 percent from the field and 23.1 percent from beyond the arc. This is the Mountain Lions' eighth time holding opponents to under 40 percent shooting in a game. and their twelth time holding opponents to under a 30 percent three-point clip.

AT THE BUZZER
Scales' buzzer beater was the first for Concord in the 2025-26 season. After Charleston split a pair of free throws to level the game at 71, the Mountain Lions burned a timeout to plan their last possession. Concord went into its motion offense until they found the right moment to strike. Stubbs drove left towards the elbow and dished it out to Scales along the left baseline. The Salem, Virginia native received the pass and nailed the open mid-range jumper to secure the season-sweep of UC. Concord's last buzzer-beater came last season in the home win over West Virginia Wesleyan. Smith caught a full-court pass with just three seconds on the clock, and banked in a deep two to just beat the clock and steal the game for Concord.

DANGEROUS DUO
Two of the most potent scorers in the Mountain East Conference are putting in work for the Maroon and Gray. Smith and Stubbs have shouldered a bulk of the offensive load for the Mountain Lions. Smith is averaging 17.8 points per game (second MEC) while Stubbs is averaging 16.0 points per game (fifth MEC). Their combined 33.8 points per game is the second most by a duo in the conference to West Virginia Wesleyan's Emma Witt and Kilah Dandridge. Through 17 games this season, Smith and Stubbs have lead Concord in scoring in 13 of those contests. In their most recent outing against Charleston, Smith and Stubbs combined for 37 points in the win. However, they both made big contributions outside of just scoring the rock. Smith secured eight rebounds and two blocks, while Stubbs brought down a season-high seven boards and dished out five assists.

STARTING EARLY
It has been incredibly important for Concord to put together a good first half in 2025-26. When the Mountain Lions lead at halftime, they have a record of 9-1. Conversely, when they trail at the half, they post a 3-4 record. Concord has led at the half in each game over the course of their four game win streak, averaging 37.5 points in the first half and allowing an average of just  28 first-half points. In the contest against Charleston, Ziolkowski led the Mountain Lions with eight points with Smith just behind her with seven. Concord also saw seven different players score in the opening half.

PACE, PACE, PACE
Glenville State plays with some of the fastest pace in Division II basketball, averaging 86.2 points per game (third in DII). Coming off of a game against a much slower paced Charleston team, Concord will have to quickly adjust to the rapid Pioneers. However, the Mountain Lions do have experience playing against similar styles. Concord has faced off against Bluefield State, Fairmont State, and Winston-Salem State who all want to force turnovers and get in transition. The Mountain Lions have a 1-2 record against those squads, but have had less than 20 turnovers in six straight games.

HIGH STAKES
Concord finds itself in other crucial game in terms of the Mountain East Conference standings. CU is still tied atop the conference with both Fairmont and Glenville State, as all three hold 8-2 conference records. Glenville State is the only MEC opponent that Concord hasn't seen yet. Taking a look back to last year's meetings, the home team won each matchup. In Athens, Concord trounced the Pioneers 99-75 with Smith exploding for 23 points and 15 rebounds. In Glenville, GSU squeaked out a 76-72 victory with junior guard Alexis Frazee dropping 26 points off the bench to lead CU.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

5 - Kenyah Stubbs has scored 17 or more points in five straight games.

26 - Alexis Frazee poured in a career-high 26 points last season in a narrow defeat at Glenville State.

85.7 - Concord's 85.7 percent from the free-throw line against Charleston is their highest mark of the season.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Glenville State has been stellar in 2025-26, entering Friday's game with a 13-3 (8-2 MEC) record. The Pioneers are not only third in DII in scoring, but sixth in turnovers forced per game (27.33), fourth in three-point attempts per game (28.6), and tied at 11th with 16.6 offensive rebounds per game. The Pioneers are led by senior guard Carine Pinkney who averages 14.6 points per game on 51.1 percent shooting. They have six players who average at least seven points per game in this high-powered system. They bounced back after a loss against Wheeling last week with a 21-point win on the road at West Virginia State.
