OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball team travels to Charleston to take on the Golden Eagles Wednesday in a Mountain East Conference contest at the Wehrle Innovation Center.

LAST TIME OUT
The Mountain Lions picked up their third straight win in a 93-77 contest against West Liberty. Concord's offense showed up with a gem of a performance, dropping a season-high 93 points. Each member of the starting five was in double figures in the victory. Sophomore guard Kenyah Stubbs led the way with a career-high 32 points. Senior forward Abbie Smith nabbed her 10th double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Senior forward Olivia Ziolkowski tacked on 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Senior guard Kennedy Scales added 10 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Junior guard Kiley Smich rounded out the starters with 10 points, three rebounds, and a steal. The Mountain Lions went 37-of-78 (47.4 percent) from the field, tying their season-high of 37 made field goals.

THE STUBBS SHOW
Stubbs played her best game in the Maroon and Gray in Saturday's win over the Hilltoppers. The Hanford, California native was getting to the rack with ease, scoring 22 of her 32 points in the paint. Stubbs went 13-for-24 from the field, including nailing her only triple. Stubbs didn't just impact the game with her scoring as she collected six rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a block to complete her action-packed performance. This showing helped her net Mountain East Conference Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. Stubbs has led Concord in scoring for three straight games and now sits fifth in the MEC, averaging 15.9 points per game.

BLOCK PARTY
The Mountain Lions put on a defensive clinic in protecting the paint, coming away with nine blocks in the win over West Liberty. The nine blocks are a new season high for Concord and are the most since January 10, 2022 in a win over UVa.-Wise when they rejected 10 shots. Ziolkowski recorded four blocks, three of them coming in the first quarter alone. Four blocks are another career-high for Ziolkowski as this bumped her up to tied for second in the MEC averaging 1.4 blocks per game. Smith swatted three shots to make it a combined seven blocks for the stellar frontcourt pairing. Stubbs and freshman guard Lacee Smith each recorded a block, their firsts of the season.

TRACK IT DOWN
Concord was excellent at corralling their own misses against WLU. The Mountain Lions tied their season high with 15 offensive rebounds in the contest, most since the season-opener against Seton Hill. The 15 offensive boards turned into 20 second-chance points for Concord which is a new season-high. The entire starting five for CU recorded at least one offensive rebound. Smith had the most with five. Ziolkowski recorded four. Smich brought down three to lead all guards. Stubbs finished with two and Scales had one. One of Concord's strengths is how well their guards rebound. Smich is third on the team with 4.4 rebounds per game and Stubbs is right behind her averaging 4.1. As a unit, Concord is sixth in the MEC in offensive rebounds per game at 11.1.

SLOW IT DOWN
The Mountain Lions have seen a plethora of styles the past few weeks in the MEC and with Charleston coming up the pace will surely be slowed. Charleston is 10th in the MEC in scoring offense, posting 62.1 points per game as they like to work the half court offense. Where UC is really dominant is on the defensive end and on the glass. Charleston has the second-best scoring defense in the conference, allowing just 61.9 points per game. The Golden Eagles' opponent field goal percentage is just 36.4 percent which is tops in the MEC. On the boards, Charleston is averaging 43.2 rebounds per game which is second best in the conference. Concord has showcased its ability to be successful at different speeds just this past week, gutting out a 66-54 win at Wheeling and winning the 93-77 shootout at home vs. West Liberty.

CHANCE TO SWEEP
As we hit the approximate halfway point in the conference schedule, teams are set to begin their second trip through conference opponents. Concord heads to Charleston this Wednesday for a very important midweek MEC matchup. Concord, Charleston, Fairmont State, and Glenville State are all tied at the top of the standings with a 7-2 record in MEC play. Looking back at their first matchup, it was Concord squeezing out a 68-61 victory in the Carter Center. A. Smith dropped in 22 points and Stubbs finished with 21 in the narrow win. Entering the half down 11, Concord mounted a 23-5 third quarter to propel themselves in front of UC. Concord has the chance to take both regular season matchups against Charleston for the second time under Coach Southcott (2023-24).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

8 - CU had eight turnovers against West Liberty, its lowest mark of the season.

21 - Abbie Smith is 21 rebounds away from 1,000 career boards.

32 - Kenyah Stubbs' 32 points is the most by a Concord player since February 27, 2021 when Riley Fitzwater had 34.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Charleston enters Wednesday's contest at 10-6 (7-2 MEC) with a five-game winning streak. Charleston is a well-balanced squad with five players averaging at least six points per game. Leading the pack is junior guard Paris Stokes who scores 12.9 points per game. Down low for UC is sophomore forward Harper Annarino. Annarino averages 10.9 points per game and 9.5 rebounds which is the second best clip in the conference, behind A. Smith. Stokes had 15 points to lead Charleston at Concord in December. The 10 three-pointers that UC connected on at the Carter Center were a season high.
