YOUNG LIONS
CU rebounded from a loss to Davis & Elkins by outlasting Wheeling in a 108-100 win Wednesday night on the road. Freshman guard
Micah Young led the way for the Mountain Lions as he tallied a career-high 39 points. It was the most points for a CU player this season, and the most since
Kollin Tolbert threw in 41 points versus Charleston last January 22. Young's 39 points are the second most in a MEC game this season and is tied for the most in Division II by a freshman in 2025-26—Slippery Rock's Dame Givner had 39 points versus Lock Haven last month. Young's scoring outburst came in his first career start. Sophomore guard
Josiah Rickards tied his season high with 20 points at Wheeling, tallying 19 after halftime. And Rickards' 12 made free throws are the most for a CU player this year.
LIGHT UP THE SCOREBOARD
Concord's 108 points at Wheeling were the most in a regulation game since January 2016 against West Virginia State when the Maroon and Gray posted 111 points. The 108 points also represented the most points in a regulation road game since November 2015 at West Virginia State when CU notched 109 points. The Mountain Lions scored 50 or more points in each half at Wheeling, 55 in the first half and 53 after halftime—the first time with two 50-point halves in the same game since February 2019 at Urbana. Although Young and Rickards led the way for Concord, three other Mountain Lions finished in double figures: junior forward
Boubacar Djigo (17), senior guard
Savier McCall (11) and junior guard
Khamani Wertz (11)—the third instance this season of five double-figure scorers. And the 108 points were paced by CU connecting on 12 three-pointers and making a season-high free throws (28).
GLASS ATTACK
After being down four on the glass at halftime Wednesday night at Wheeling, 23-19, CU dominated the second-half rebounding battle and finished +14 on the boards, 51-37. Â The 51 rebounds were a season high for the Mountain Lions. Along with his 17 points, Djigo finished with 15 rebounds for his 10
th double-double of the year. Djigo nearly had a double-double on his offensive rebounding total of nine. Concord's 23 offensive rebounds as a team were the most since last year's triple overtime game at West Virginia State. Djigo is second in Division II in rebounds per game (13.1) and is fifth nationally in offensive rebounds per game (4.2). Rickards (eight) and Young (seven) both finished with a career-high total in rebounding. The Mountain Lions' rebounding margin of +6.3 is third in the MEC while West Liberty is eighth at -2.3.
MEETING ON THE MOUNTAIN
When the Mountain Lions and West Liberty matchup Saturday afternoon, first place in the MEC will be on the line. Concord is 7-1—the best record through eight games for the Marron and Gray since the inception of the MEC prior to the 2013-14 season. The Hilltoppers are 6-1 in the conference this season with its only blemish last weekend in a 99-89 loss at Fairmont State. CU is in uncharted territory as a win on Saturday would put the Mountain Lions in sole possession of first place at the latest point in a season during the MEC era. West Liberty is in a familiar spot. The Hilltoppers have won 10 of the previous 12 MEC regular-season titles. Saturday marks the 15
th straight year that Concord hosts WLU when the Hilltoppers are ranked inside the Division II Top 25. CU has not defeated West Liberty at home since January 2021, but did knock off WLU on the road last season, 85-77, when the Hilltoppers were 10
th in the national poll.
DEPTH TEST
Concord's depth will be put to the test Saturday against West Liberty. Sophomore forward
Kraig Gilbert plays 31.3 minutes per game which is fifth in the MEC. Meanwhile, Djigo is running 30.0 minutes per contest which is top 15 in the conference. However, CU's bench has been instrumental in the Mountain Lions' 10-4 start on the season as the second unit is averaging 20.7 points per game. And Wednesday's game at Wheeling broke a streak of eight games in which CU's reserves combined for at least 20 points. McCall led the bench effort with a career-best 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting. West Liberty has perhaps the deepest team in Division II. The Hilltoppers average 96.5 points per game which is second in Division II. Ten players average at least six points per game and through 14 games, the WLU bench has outscored the starters this season (49.8-46.7).
TAKE CARE OF THE ROCK
West Liberty gets nearly 25 percent of its offense from points off turnovers, 23.4 points per game. The Hilltoppers are fourth in Division II with 13.1 steals per game. And WLU forces 22 turnovers per game from the opposition. This season, the Mountain Lions have done a stellar job of not turning the ball over. Concord only has two games with 15 or more turnovers and the 11.5 turnovers averaged by CU are the fewest in the MEC. Earlier this season against Fairmont State's full-court pressure, Concord only committed nine turnovers and limited FSU to six points off turnovers. Even though the Mountain Lions only force 11.6 turnovers per game, third fewest in the MEC, CU has only been outscored in points off turnovers three times this season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
3- Concord is 3-2 in its last three five games against nationally-ranked teams, including upsetting WLU last year on the road, and picking up a 95-87 win at Fairmont State in December.
12- CU held West Liberty to 12 points off turnovers in last year's upset win, even though the Mountain Lions committed 21 turnovers.
25- Season-high fast break points for the Mountain Lions at Wheeling.
SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS
Former West Liberty standout Michael Lamberti (Class of '16) takes over Ben Howlett who is now on the sidelines at Division I IU-Indianapolis. Lamberti spent the previous two seasons at Coker where he compiled a record of 34-24. The first-year head coach at WLU brought with him seven transfers from Coker, including West Liberty's leading scorer, Jamie Muldowney (13.2 points per game). Northern Michigan transfer Peter Lattos drops in 9.9 points per game and adds 4.8 rebounds. A pair of freshmen guards have also stepped into prominent roles for the Hilltoppers. Cameron Williams nets 10.0 points per game while Myles Montgomery is averaging 7.8 points per game and his 2.1 steals per game are third in the MEC.
