AERIALÂ ATTACK
In Concord's 38-31 loss at Bluefield State, before its only bye week of the season, the Maroon and Gray took to the air for a second straight game as sophomore quarterback
Tyler Mizzell tossed for 314 yards and four touchdowns. Mizzell had CU's first four-touchdown passing game since 2023 when Jack Mangel threw for four scores at Wheeling. Two of Mizzell's touchdowns went to redshirt freshman wide receiver
Dom Collins who hauled in seven passes for 107 yards to go with the two scores. Collins is tied for sixth in Division II in touchdown receptions (four) this season. Mizzell's seven passing touchdowns in 2025 are tied for eighth in Division II. Collins is 12
th in receiving yards (293) while Mizzell is 22
nd in the country in passing yards (703). CU is top three in Division II with 351.5 passing yards per game.
GROUND DELIVERY
After being held to 23 rushing yards at UVa.-Wise in the season opener, the Mountain Lions broke off for 181 yards on the ground at Bluefield State. It was a collection of rushers that helped CU top 180 yards on the ground for just the second time in the last 28 games, dating back to the 2022 season. Junior running back
Maurice Jones toted the ball 15 times for 70 yards to lead the rushing offense. Mizzell scampered for 49 yards on 14 attempts which were the most rushing yards for a CU quarterback since November 2019. Although graduate running back
Rashad Luckey-Dowdy only carried the ball eight times at BSU, the Greenville, South Carolina native clipped off 37 yards and had CU's longest run of the season, 17 yards.
LEADER OF THE D
Junior defensive back
Nehemiah Scott has picked up where he left off last season. Scott finished fourth on the team in tackles, and was CU's leading returner tackler entering the 2025 campaign. Through two games, Scott has racked up 10 tackles in each game while recording six pass break-ups through two games. The Richmond, Virginia native is tied for second in Division II in pass break-up while his 10 tackles per game are tied for 28
th in Division II. Additionally, Scott had a career-best two tackles for loss at Bluefield State. In last year's meeting versus Charleston, Scott was held to just two tackles for the game.Â
WRECKING HAVOC
With the help of Scott, the Mountain Lions rolled up a total of nine tackles for loss at Bluefield State two weeks ago. It was tied for the second-most tackles for loss for CU over the last two seasons. Sophomore linebacker
Xavier Ellison crashed into the backfield for three tackles for loss. Graduate defensive lineman
Jaylen Dollar made 1.5 tackles for lost yardage. And senior defensive lineman
Michael Herbert recorded CU's second safety in the last six games, dating back to last season, as his only TFL at Bluefield State was a sack in the end zone. Through three games, Charleston is allowing an average of six negative yardages plays per game.
IN HIGH GEAR
On Saturday, two of the best offenses not only in the MEC collide, but two of the most-potent offenses in Division II. CU is producing 453.5 yards per game which ranks eighth in Division II. CU is number one in the MEC in both passing yards and total offense. Charleston is third in the MEC in total offense (449.3), but the Golden Eagles use a more balanced approach, rushing for 224.3 yards per game and throwing for 225 per contest. UC's rushing offense is 21
st in Division II while Charleston is 20
th in total offense. In the last six meetings between CU and Charleston, the winning team has scored at least 40 points with Concord outlasting the Golden Eagles 68-60 in Athens in 2022.
MOVE THE STICKS
Concord is one of the best teams in the country in gaining first downs. Through two games, the Mountain Lion are averaging 23.5 first downs per game, including 28 at Bluefield State September 6. Additionally, Concord has one of the best third-date rates in Division II, ranking top 60 in Division II at 42.9 percent. Charleston is the best third-down defense in Division II (11.4 percent). The Golden Eagles have allowed Livingstone, California (Pa.) and West Alabama to convert a combined three third downs in 32 tries in three contests. In last year's contest, Concord was 4-for-12 on third down, but gained only 10 first downs against the Golden Eagles. Charleston was 11-for-16 on third down versus the CU defense in 2024.
THE SCORING ZONE
Even though Concord has gone over 30 points in each of its first two games, the Mountain Lions have scored in just two trips into the red zone on five attempts. The 40 percent rate on red zone scoring is ninth in the MEC. Charleston has had its own issues inside the 20-yard line as UC has only scored in five tries in nine trips to the red zone. The Mountain Lions do possess one of the best red zone defenses in the MEC as Concord has only allowed eight scores in 12 tries. The 66.7 percent is top 35 in Division II for red zone defense. The Golden Eagles have only allowed five scores in eight red zone possessions by the opponents---three of the five scores are field goals.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
12- Years since Concord won at Charleston, a 9-3 double overtime game in 2013.
85- Plays runs by CU at Bluefield State—tying for the most since at least 2011.
180- Passing yards allowed per game by the Mountain Lions which ranks top 50 in Division II.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Ean Hamric took over the offense for the Golden Eagles halfway through last season, and this season has thrown seven touchdowns while averaging 225 yards per game through the air. Hamric is also a threat to run as he has attempted 10 or more rushes in all three games. Yves Bosmans has caught four touchdowns, and is the only UC player with double-digit receptions (15). Multi-time All-MEC selection Aden Miller leads the defense with 21 tackles and a sack. The losses against nationally-ranked Cal U and West Alabama came by a combined eight points.
