NEW ORLEANS – The freshmen pair of
Cassidy Hammonds and
Cierra Parker of the Concord University women's track & field team have been honored on the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) All-Atlantic Region Team, the organization released.
Hammonds, a native of Lee, Virginia, landed on the all-region squad for her heptathlon performance at the Mountain East Conference Championships in late April. Meanwhile, Parker made an appearance on the All-Atlantic Region Team in the high jump.
Hammonds shattered the school record in the heptathlon by scoring 4,635 points, nearly 500 more points than the previous mark, on her way to winning the event at the MEC Championships. Hammonds won the javelin in the heptathlon while finishing as the runner-up in four of the other six events—the 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, long jump and 800-meter run. Hammonds' point total was good enough for second in the Atlantic Region.
For Parker, she is also a school-record holder as a freshman. The Farmington, West Virginia native cleared 1.71 meters in the high jump at the 49er Classic hosted by Charlotte in late March. She broke a 20-year old school record that was set by Bethany Gatewood at 1.63 meters. Parker's clearance in the event ranked top 25 in all of Division II. In addition to having the fourth-best jump in the Atlantic Region, she was the MEC Champion in the event as she went over 1.70 meters.
Hammonds and Parker are the first all-region athletes for the women's track & field program since
Emily Wallace in 2022. And the duo are the first all-region freshmen at Concord since Shawnee Carnett in 2010.
The top five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region honors, in addition to each of the members of a top three ranked relay team.
