MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Concord ended an 11-game losing streak to Charleston by downing the Golden Eagles for the first time since January 2021 with an 82-78 win Saturday afternoon at home. Two important keys stood out for the Mountain Lions in the victory. Charleston entered the game shooting 42 percent from three-point range and connecting on 12 triples per game. The Maroon and Gray held UC to six three-pointers and a 37.5 percent rate (6-for-16) from beyond the arc. Charleston also owned the MEC's best rebounding margin as the Golden Eagles were outrebounding teams by more than six per game. However, CU revered the script and outrebounded Charleston by six, 39-33. The effort on the boards was led by junior forward Boubacar Djigo with 15 rebounds—his fifth game this year with at least 15 rebounds—and sophomore forward Kraig Gilbert grabbing nine rebounds.

GROWING UP
Freshman guard Micah Young stepped up in a big way for the Mountain Lions Saturday. The Westerville, Ohio native finished tied with Djigo for the team high in scoring with 17 points. Young was efficient as he only played 18 minutes in scoring 17 points. He finished 9-for-9 at the foul line, including going 6-for-6 at the charity stripe in the final 26 seconds to help seal the win. For the second straight game, Young was near the top of the roster in +/- as he recorded a team-best +18 in the four-point win. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Cole Lambert came off the bench for the first time this season, but logged 23 minutes as he helped clamp down on Charleston in the second half. Lambert finished with six points and three assists. It was Lambert's fourth game this year with at least three assists.

GET ON THE LINE
While Concord did not get heated up from the field until the second half of Saturday's win, the free-throw stripe helped the Mountain Lions scratch out the win. CU recorded a season-high 23 made foul shots while shooting 82.1 percent (23-for-28) at the charity stripe. After shooting above 70 percent once in the first four games of the year, Concord has now shot better than 80 percent in three straight contests. The 23 makes at the foul line were the most in a regulation game since a 92-85 road win at Glenville State in January when CU connected on 25 free throws. Along with Young going 9-for-9 at the line, Djigo was 5-of-8 and junior forward Anfernee Hanna was a perfect 4-for-4.

BIG MAN RULES

Djigo and Gilbert are at or near the top of virtually every statistical category for CU. Djigo not only leads Concord and the MEC in rebounding, but also Division II at 15.3 per game. His 15.0 points per game are 13th in the conference. Gilbert checks in at fourth in the conference in scoring (18.3) and leads the conference in three-point percentage (52.6) which is also tenth nationally. The 6-foot-8 Concord duo may face their toughest test to date with Frostburg State's 6-foot-8 Mike Montano and 6-foot-9 Kyle Whippen on the court Wednesday. Montanto is Division II's leading scorer at 29.0 points per game. He shoots 56.5 percent from the floor and grabs 12 rebounds per contest. Whippen throws in 13 points per game and more than eight rebounds while shooting 53.4 percent from the floor.

PUT UP THE STOP SIGN
Just like it was against Charleston, the Concord defense will be challenged by a Bobcats' squad that shoots nearly 50 percent on the season. FSU is top 10 nationally in scoring (96.3), but Frostburg State is also bottom 10 in Division II in points allowed per game (91.4). The Mountain Lions have held four teams to 45 percent or worse from the field this season, and CU is seeking to notch its seventh straight game of holding an opponent under 80 points—a feat that hasn't been accomplished since the 2011-12 season. CU is second in the MEC in scoring defense (74.3) and third in field-goal defense (44.0). Over 258 games under head coach Todd May, Concord has held the opponent to less than 45 percent shooting in exactly half those games, sporting a record of 103-26.

ONE AND DONE
The battle on the boards, specifically the offensive glass, could be crucial Wednesday night. Concord and Frostburg State are tied for first in the MEC in offensive rebounding, 14.1 per game. Djigo leads the league in offensive rebounds per game (4.4) while Montano and Whippen both tear down 3.1 offensive rebounds per contest, tied for third in the MEC. Gilbert averages 2.1 offensive boards per game. Concord is coming off back-to-back games of 17 offensive rebounds that it turned into a total of 39 second-chance points versus West Virginia State and UC. Concord allows 12.8 offensive rebounds per game. Both teams have a similar overall rebounding margin on the season with the Mountain Lions checking in at +2.7 and Frostburg State at +2.6, third and fourth in the conference, respectively.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
1- Gilbert secured his first career double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds) at Frostburg State last season.

7- Concord has won seven of the last eight games against the Bobcats with the lone loss coming at FSU last December.

40- Concord has been +40 with Young on the floor over the last two games versus Charleston and West Virginia State.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Trey Simmons who scored 13 points in 10 minutes in a lopsided loss, 98-73, to Concord last season in Athens complements Montano in the scoring column. Simmons is third in the MEC in scoring (18.9), just ahead of Gilbert. In addition to leading the nation in scoring, Montano has recorded a 26-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist triple double this season in a win at West Virginia Wesleyan. Mitch Finefrock leads the MEC with 24 made three-pointers and is shooting 42.9 percent from three-point distance. Frostburg State is coming off a 108-94 loss to Davis & Elkins on the road Saturday. Wednesday night finishes off a four-game road trip for the Bobcats.
